Re: 15/5 Keg Build
I love my Fast Fermenter. Be careful not to scratch the inside as you're working in it. Very easy to harvest an save your yeast. I've got a big ole 20 gallon stainless pot I'm going to use to mash in, so that will take most of the mixing. Is it so soft that I can't use a wooden paddle? Is there a n...

Re: Newbie. Mash not bubbling through bubbler
It's going to be impossible for people to help figure out what's happening without the details of your process. For example, if you put your barley and corn together and boiled it up ... you killed the enzymes. Assuming you had malted barley and not just barley. Since you're a newbie and maybe a vis...

Well, since we're spending your money, why not switch the thumper head to the style where you use a TEE instead of an elbow and feed the line from the boiler through the TEE? It saves a little fabrication and real estate on the thumper head. Then ditch the Liebig altogether, get some plates from Twi...

OK, I don't mind skipping a step of it's not going to help, that's why I'm discussing it with you guys as I go. When I was reading the Liebig threads it seemed like a lot of people included it with a 1/4" water jacket casing. Too late on the spout though, I made it already. :D That's where I s...

Re: Texas judge rules home distilling ban UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
The whole thing misses the point in my opinion . If it is OK to produce x amount of wine and beer a year tax free fir personal consumption , why should one then be taxed when that same alcohol is distilled . That I believe is the ridiculous point that a Judge in New Zealand realised. Unless congres...

Requiring a license or anything else would do nothing to stop people who want to make and sell bootleg liquor.

Re: Introducing my MICRO-MINI
I have a thought - boil some water in it first to test out that induction setup. If it gives you fits, you won't have a boiler full of vinegar mix to dump out. It occurs to me that you could get a 5 or 8 gallon stainless boiler and bypass the thumpers for stripping and then reconfigure it to stock f...

I have theoretically considered the heat issue. One reason I went with a heavier copper even though they are so small. I have some Roxul Safe n Sound rockwool insulation. On the other hand, maybe TTB is cozying up to congress to "fix" the law. 2 provisions were ruled unconstitutional only because they didn't reference "interstate commerce". From page 28 of the ruling: " These provisions are simply “criminal statute(s) that by [their] terms” h...

So now, as a HDA member, you can apply for a permit from the Federal Government to distill in your home, as opposed to the same permitting process for a shed based distillation plant. You will still need to register your still with a serial number before your permit is approved and agree for agents...

Maybe a restaurant supply house? At the start of 2012, we spent more than two weeks without power in near record low temperatures. Yep, no...

The electrical grid really is any modern society's Achilles heel. The status quo would change immediately, in the face of a continent wide loss of power . And yet most people don't think or talk bout it... This is the absolute truth. Turn the power off for 48 hours and people revert to cavemen. Pos...

Re: Federal judge in TX strikes down home distilling ban!
Although it is clear, I would rather see the limit be gallons of alcohol at X abv. On two hundred gallons of beer that can vary greatly if it is 5% cider you are distilling or a 12% sugar wash for vodka. It would make a more even playing field for those that are chasing quality, thus limiting the w...

There are bipartisan efforts underway. Check out this bill in New Hampshire: https://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/bill_status/billinfo.aspx?id=1803&inflect=2 It's worth looking at the text of this bill (now law). It about 3 paragraphs of plain English, crystal clear. Though there is an odd repetiti...

Re: Ban on at-home distilling unconstitutional
States could ban distilling as the ruling was not that one has a constitutional right to distill, but that the feds do not have a constitutional basis to regulate the actual distilling. Unless congress puts through a bill with an exemption of X gal per year, you will still be subject to tax fraud f...

So no...no State Law outlawing home distilling...and I feel this ruling will survive the two week stay, and free us fro...

Re: Texas judge rules home distilling ban UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
State laws would still apply. Sorry, but State Laws don't trump the Fed. We've been through this in Pennsylvania where PA law says Home Distilling is legal, but it didn't matter because the Fed (ATF) trumped our State Law. This is a ruling on the US Constitution, States can not overturn this! State...
