Re: Silicone tip for steam wand
The mash will roll and turn mixing itself when it gets hot. No need for more tips the steam latent heat will overcome the heat transfer at 11k watts and the steam bubbles will rise turning the mash. Like a boiling pot on the stove. The tip is unique that you can adjust the cut to increase pressure ...

Re: Using enzymes to boost conversion
I would say up your corn to the proper amount for a 3X recipe. That would be another 5.5# of fermentable sugars you could extract.
How long are you keeping the corn at temp. Using the large batch method without insulation makes it more difficult to extract fully.

Re: Using enzymes to boost conversion
My calc is giving me 1.77 lb/gallon. My 3.13 lb oats and red white pale malt may be the issue that's each not total. I've been thinking about upping the grain/water ratio as well but went this way first. On my previous batches OG was over 1.050 but my calcs say it should be over 1.070 at 100%. All ...

Re: Using enzymes to boost conversion
Your low OG looks to me to be from not enough grains in the mix. You’re barely over one pound per gallon. I’d shoot for closer to 1.8-2# per gallon and see what that does for you. At 2# per gallon I came up with: 21# corn 3# red wheat 3# white wheat 3# pale malt 1.5# honey malt That’s the original r...

Re: Leftover marble floor tile as pH buffer?
Are you sure there is a binder in it? I’d try taking a torch to it. Marble isn’t going to burn or smolder. If there’s no reaction to getting it good and hot maybe you’re just seeing the veins in the marble veining instead of resin. Just an idea.

Re: Smelly grey film inside column - NOTHING CLEANS IT!
I had something similar on some pieces I'm soldered up using Harris stay brite paste flux. It almost seems like it’s petroleum based. Lesson learned. Now I use either the liquid flux or water soluble. Both those seem to clean up better for me. I got some of that for free with some staybrite 8 solde...

I haven’t worked with rye but my question would be. With it being seed grade rye, had it been treated with chemicals?

I have used 5/8 and 7/8 powder Coating hi temp silicone caps for 1/2 or 3/4 copper pipe. When steam mashing and stripping in the beginning the pressure will rise to 1.2 psig then fall as the mash heats up but this is no different than the ss braid I was using. I have tried both single and double he...

Also, if you get a moment, can you post a pic of what the malted berries look like? I'd like to compare to the malt I've been making.
Thanks.

Re: SPP source
I've searched and do not recall finding anyone who makes SPP at the proper dimensions for a 3" column. SPP is typically made for 2" and smaller columns. I've always been interested in trying SPP, but it's so darn expensive. I considered making it too, but Lava Rock works so darn good that...

I’ve been searching around to no avail looking for SPP. too many irons in the fire currently to be able to make my own. I was hoping to start a thread that may get some links to help me and some others looking for the same. I’m looking for SPP for a 3” column 36-42” packed section.

Re: AMA mill modification
I have the same mill. I’d be concerned about not being able to control feed rate of some grains. That coupled with being able to close it before the shotgun blast to the face I’ll leave mine. You could have extended the tab and cut a slot in the bottom of the hopper. That way the tab extended to the...

Re: All grain question
You will know if it pukes. You can hear it starting to gurgle as the foam is coming up the column. Corrected by killing it reducing heat may get you some wash color in the first jar that should clear on the rest of the jars. If left uncorrected, or let go too long, get the mop bucket. What was your ...

A puke will easily travel that far given the chance. Heat up a molasses wash too fast one time if you want to see how far a puke will travel. As to your color issue. You stated the still was 12 years old. If this was the first time using after a long set did it get a sacrificial cleaning? What do yo...

Finished clearing it out and I’m closer to 20-25 gallon between blackberries, black raspberries, peaches, and homemade applesauce. Most of it is berries. Freezer is unplugged and letting them thaw out slowly.

If you had done your research on CM you wouldn’t have gone with that design. Not trying to bust your balls, but performance will be lacking. What are you planning to use for packing? 36” is on the shorter side for a 2” column, without really efficient packing. Not sure why you have the tee on what s...

Looking at your plates, five looks pretty tight. I tried a couple sets and never did like my tube spacing. There’s a reason most shotguns are four 1/2” I.d. or an occasional seven 1/2” o.d. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but four is much easier and will knockdown anything you need.

I usually only run in the 2500-3000 range on my 4” sieve plate. Id venture to guess his coil would work. It would be nice if it had a bit more capability, but he'll probably never need it.
