Re: Looking for new oak barrel in canada
I can see where it’s leaking, was just thinking of waxing just the part that leaks to seal it up

Re: Looking for new oak barrel in canada
I have this barrel in use and it won’t stop leaking. I’ve tried hammering down the hoops, realigning the staves, I think next is trying to just coat in beeswax. I’d recommend not buying from them.

Single malt recipe suggestions
So I’ve tried this a couple of times and it’s been working, just wanted some input into it to see where I can improve. I pulled it out of a scotch distillery tour that I can’t find any more. Im working on a new cooler mash tun so I can double it up. Sorry for the mix of units, it’s a Canadian thing....

Re: Looking for new oak barrel in canada
I just ordered the 20l barrel form bochart, pleasantly surprised. came with a stand, two bungs and an all oak spigot. seems well made, but wasnt charred, just very lightly toasted, and the staves only. took it apart and charred it up with a torch. came apart and went back together pretty easily Id b...

Re: Are boil enhancers and distillation conditioner required?
Oyster shell - that’s interesting. Do you notice any particular reaction with the distillate and backset as it becomes more acidic through the run? Cheers, j nope, I only use the small still for upgrading stuff to nearer to a neutral or refining flavour essences. I hadn't considered that for real r...

Re: Are boil enhancers and distillation conditioner required?
I have a glass lab-grade still and I use bits of crushed oyster shell as boiling chips always, it really helps smooth out the boil and prevent really large bubbles and rocking.
I might try them now in my big still, it can get rocking pretty good when it's up to temp!

Never used one, but there's a bunch for sale on locally, was planning on using them for low wines storage and aging.
I did a search here but got a mess-load of results, anything I need to know other than taking out any rubber gaskets?

Re: Whiskey stones
Hard to tell from the picture, if you can scratch them really easily, it’ll be soapstone, even more so if the feel kinda soapy when dry.
Otherwise, could be some kind of diabase or another fine grained intrusive rock.
Did you lick them?
Not granite, even though they ohh the marketed as such.

Distilling Hand Sanitizer
So, I know making hand sanitizer has been covered, but now that it's so readily available, my local hardware store has 5 gallon pails of it that are close to the expiry date on sale for 20$ at 80% ABV. I want to be clear, I'm not going to, but do you think you could distill the stuff and safely sepa...

Re: Where to get bottles in Canada
If you're looking for 1 or 1/2 gallon jugs, uline has them for a reasonable price, and I believe they'll let you do cash and carry. https://www.uline.ca/BL_8215/Glass-Jugs?keywords=jug I was looking at a local brew shops website and they were selling the growlers for 28$ empty! Otherwise, I put up a...

Re: Earth based condensing theory question
I meant something like this since you said you will use it in very cold periods. The container could be very large and placed outside. At a certain point the snow melts but in any case it will give a lot of time and then it can be easily topped up.Immagine.png If you're going to do this, you'll nee...

Re: Jimbo's Single Malt AG Recipe
Thanks for replying! I figured I didn't have anything to lose, so I pulled off all the beer and reheated it to 150f and repeated the process, when I checked this morning it was up to 1.055 after temp correction, so I pitched and it's fermenting happily. I think the water temp is my issue, I followed...

Re: Jimbo's Single Malt AG Recipe
So, I just made my second round of this, and I’m not sure if I’m doing it properly. 37lb of malt barley, 15 gallon of water, came out at 1.041og. I’m thinking this could be higher and debating if I should heat up the beer and re add it to the grain to try and get a bit more out of it? Did an iodine ...

It’s been -30c the last couple of days, so I reconfigured the still to put some copper in the line and I’m working on a spirit run of some honey-shine. I’ve been calling it Kvasir mostly for the lack of a better name. I guess I’ll have to rename my still Odins Anus! 4B7691A4-B711-4B30-B7EB-A6E4B88C5...

Re: Crushed Oyster shell

I’m ok with hijacking.
The plan is to use 3 60w incandescent light bulbs. No clue if it’ll be enough heat. If not, it’ll be back to the drawing board.
I have an inkbird temp controller for the temp, and was going to use an electric timer to run the fan for 15 mins every hour
