Re: Bubble plate in boka

Fine, Ill put it at the bottom   In all honestly though, thanks for the advice. My next issue is my single grain whisky brew didn't ferment  Awaiting a delivery of more iodine and a PH tester to work out where I screwed up  **Edit**: Started to ferment, just taken 2 days ...

Re: Bubble plate in boka

I had to google what a bubble ball is, ended up with a load of people running into each other wearing some sort of inflated jobby! Based off of what everyone has said I will run one at the bottom and see what happens then. I kind of wanted to run it at the top (I may try it at some point) main...

Re: Bubble plate in boka

In regards to more fluid flow collapsing the gradient in the column, wouldn't this mean that I am able to retain the same reflux rate with a lower heat? If I have the same amount going up the column as coming down (100% reflux) then surely I can't have more reflux than I did before by installing a b...

Re: Bubble plate in boka

Thanks everyone, acfixer69 I have bubble caps at the moment so I was going to use those. I think I will give it a go just to see what happens as it seems to be relatively unexplored territory... Ill run it once at the bottom and once at the top and see how it goes. My main plan is to get more output...

Re: Bubble plate in boka

I may give it a go and see what happens! I am running a few 24 hour turbo brew washes at the moment for testing cleaning and to make hand sanitizer with as supply is 0 at the moment. I've made a recipe with natural oils etc that I have been giving to people and the reviews are positive. Part of the ...

Re: Bubble plate in boka

That makes complete sense! The reason I asked originally was to find out if the returning distillate from the column would hit the bubble plate and build up leading to poor flavours further up the still head but that's been dismissed so thankyou! Out of interest is there a reason to run it at the bo...

Re: Bubble plate in boka

So I wouldn't get an improvement from running a 3" bubble plate followed by a 24" packed column or a 24" packed column topped with a 3" bubble plate? My thought it that I already have the joints there to put a bubble plate (or two) in and I have the bubble plates so I thought it'...

Re: Bubble plate in boka

There very well may be a better way. I have another 24" column that I could pack but I am restricted on ceiling height hence why I was wondering about installing a bubble plate as a way to increase purity without increasing height?

Hi Everyone, Been a little while since I have been chatting but I ended up being away with work for almost a year and the still took a back bench for the duration :( With the current world situation I have a new found freedom and the undying will to get back to it so here I am! Re: Vapors

You can get drunk quicker from vapours than from drinking. Bit of a known trick at parties with the young ones is to put a small amount of vodka in a 2L drinking bottle and then pump it up like a bottle rocket. Let all the pressure out and it vapourises into a cloud, inhale it and you go from sober ...

Thanks! I guess I need to give it more head room or something next time. I probably lost 2-3 pints out the barrel so I need to create a way to stop that happening again

Hook rum went nuts?!

Okay so I am a little confused. I followed the hook rum recipe to the letter making 50L of wash. It was a fresh brew so no dunder meaning I used a teaspoon of citric acid. The mollases I used were 46% sugars. I set the brew with a temp of 35 before pitching yeast and it went crazy. Within 2 hours I ...

Re: Ultrasound ageing?

Just placing bottles inside the filled ultrasonic cleaner works then? Mine is 30L so should take a fair few bottles. Do you place them in the basket or strait onto the bottom? How long do you run it for? Sorry for all the questions. Asking someone for their opinion makes a lot more sense than gettin...

Ultrasound ageing?

Ok, so I think we can all agree that there is no substitute to normal ageing, however I have been reading a bit about ultrasound ageing. Supposedly the ultrasonic sound waves increase the speed of ageing to create a whisky for example with the same chemical composition and flavour profile of a 10 ye...

Re: Yet another YouTube methanol video

I have been doing a little bit more research. Turns out eau-de-vie is generally full of Methanol anyway, that's why all the studies seem to be based on it. The United States legal limit of methanol for fruit brandy is 0.35% by volume or 280 mg/100mL of 40% ethanol. The Eau-de-vie contains upto, and ...

Re: Yet another YouTube methanol video

I've been having a read of that study and it's numbers, even though it takes FOREVER to load. The tests etc lead to what look like very scary figures when actually they aren't scary at all. The test figures aren't showing the true amount of methanol in the wash but comparing it to the alcohol output...

Re: Yet another YouTube methanol video

I mainly do all-bran washes and do proper cuts etc so I'm not really scared of it per say. It just raised the thought in my mind that running it with the output shut and then stabilising would lead to methanol being mixed back in, defeating the point in the foreshots. If I did a lot of fruit washes,...

Re: Yet another YouTube methanol video

I actually had questions about methanol myself. Recently a news article popped up about a girl who went away to Bali or somewhere like that and they served a fake vodka that contained methanol, so much methanol in fact she woke up the next day blind. According to the news it was distilled by "g...

Re: Cooling water flow direction?

Thanks, I guess I will just leave it as is seeing as there doesn't appear to be a steadfast answer. I was just wondering because I am having some control issues at the moment. It has a tonne of knock down power, so much so that the cooling water valve is set to almost off and its a tiny little trick...

Cooling water flow direction?

Hi everyone, Sorry if I missed this in the search, I have been googling about and searched the forum to no avail. What is the correct direction for the coolant flow on a double helix coil? I'm completely shocked by the temps you guys are seeing. Normally would think you would only see such a temp with a bad connection or something. I never get more than the slightest sensation of warmth from my heatsink so long as the fan is running. I'm the same, cold air in, cold air out :econfused:

Re: Thermometer: what to use and where to put it!

Thermometers in my experience proved to be less than useful in the boiler sadly. I found fitting a sight glass on the top of the keg to be more useful. when it goes clear the vapours are working their way up the still so defeating the point of having one to know when its about to start running and t...

Re: CIP Balls (Clean in place) - for cleaning kegs & carboys

It all depends on the pressure of your home water system, they vary from between 1-3 bar. If you have pressurised hot water from either a combi-boiler or a unvented cylinder you could use 3 bar of hot water, that's sure to cut through a load of junk. If you get one of those drill bit sets that do 1-...

Re: CIP Balls (Clean in place) - for cleaning kegs & carboys

I use a (unused and sterile) drain cleaning attachment on the pressure washer. Has one forward jet and then 4 reverse jets. Add 130 bar of water pressure and you get one hell of a cleaner!
