Re: Orange Liquor
I made some this way .... it’s a method I got off Emptyglass. I made a little stand to go in a wide mouth jar out of a staino sink strainer and some staino threaded rod . Replaced the plastic tap with a cork . I dig your stand, very cool. It should only take about 4 to 6 weeks at most to ...

Re: Cloudy Gin when dilute to drinking strength
Many gins are diluted to 43%, especially microdistilleries,I assume for this reason as they are more tasty than big brands. Whatever gin recipe I do, mine is always cloudy at 40% and always clears between 43-45%. I diluted it as much as I can before it gets cloudy, as simple as that. If I dilute a b...

Re: Arto's Gin Recipe V3
Made this recipe few days ago. The herbs macerated overnight for about 12 hours in 50% alc neutral made from wine. First impressions the nose seems very balanced. No herb stands out really besides the obvious juniper smell. I may use fresh citrus peel next time. Again, Only my first thoughts but it ...

Re: Arto's Gin Recipe V3
Hi Arto, very nice receipe, I am willing to try it, however it seems pretty difficult to find Lindentree Blossom around here. Would you suggest any substitute for this? Also, if I don't want to grind it, how long should I let it macerate? the usual 20-24h at 63%?? thanks! If you go a a good enough ...

Re: Arto's Gin Recipe V3
Thanks Arto for sharing. I also have been on a Gin journey on may side for a few years now on and off. I have a very good recipe that I will share here eventually but for now I am curious about this one. I just finished preparing the botanicals and will let them soak overnight and distill tomorrow. ...

Grapefruit goes really well with rosemary. This is what I use for citrus. Just go easy on the rosemary but it is a great botanical

Re: Sodium Carbonate and soapy smell
Thank you all for your feedback.
I am rerunning a spirit run today and the smell is fine.
Not sure if I can trust it however since there could have been some sort of contamination from cleaning product...may use it to create my own cleaning product!!
I started a new 80L wash

Re: Sodium Carbonate and soapy smell
Thank you all for your comments; this is great input. Now that I smell the crystals and do notice a faint "clean, ozonic" smell similar to when you open your dishwasher after a load. I use calcium carbonate for brewing and know for sure this is food grade, so maybe next time I could use th...

Re: Sodium Carbonate and soapy smell
Thanks for your quick reply. The base was approx 60% sugar, 30% flaked corn and 10% barley. lots of nutrient and fermentation went great and was completely dry FG @ 0.096 Did a cold crash for 3-4 days and the wash was clear. Smelled a bit fruity before distilling in low wines. I did a run and then a...

Sodium Carbonate and soapy smell
On my journey to produce the best vodka (and neutral for gin), I decided to add Sodium Carbonate to my low wines before my spirit run. I got my Sodium Carbonate from an organic grocery nearby and made sure it was 100% pure as it was in the cleaning product section and sold as washing soda. I was qui...

Re: Lavender Gin
Update: The tincture: Did 1 tablespoon in 250mls of 40% and it was OK. Not strong enough to add in small amounts to a G&T and have it impart enough lavender for me. Ended up adding 1oz to a pint to get enough. May try a higher ABV and more lavender to get something more concentrated. Lavender G...

Re: VM, CM, and LM confusion
Thank you all for your input. Unfortunately the pot still is at a different location and this is why I was inquiring about stripping with the AlcoEngine column. I should be able to have both stills at the same location in the future but couldn't wait to have access to the pot still to do the strippi...

Re: VM, CM, and LM confusion
AFAIK those stills have a restrictor in the outlet that sets the reflux ratio , so the still can’t really be used for stripping . I believe some come with an optional oversized restrictor but it still isn’t a true Potstill unless you can bore out or remove the restrictor . Then you should be able t...

Re: VM, CM, and LM confusion
I have the AlcoEngine and I am able to get 96% pure alcohol. Im not sure that is possible using such a short reflux column, that is unless you have modified the column to be longer. If it were that simple to people wouldn't be going to the trouble of building much taller reflux columns. Have you te...

Re: VM, CM, and LM confusion
Thank you for this forum and discussion. I have the AlcoEngine and I am able to get 96% pure alcohol. I am an advanced winemaker and also have a microbrewery so quite at ease with wash, mash, etc. I do have one question for fellow members here as I am quite green in distilling. Once my wash is done,...

Re: Modifying my homebrew boil kettle
Hey folks, Writing here as I am struggling to seal my boil kettle properly, or at least that's what it seems based on yields I have been getting... I assume I am losing some sweet stuff. I used the paperclip above all around the kettle but I do not have a seal. I am thinking of using a high temp foo...

...Ideas I've thought about in my mind would be making a food grade safe seal from liquid food grade silcode in a tube. Put it around lid and set lid on pot and let dry. Put a release ajent on one side. Then use spring clamps around lid during distillation.... NO...NO...NO. Silicone is NOT safer fo...

Seems like we are on a similar journey, and in parallel! Just finished a spirit run of my latest gin recipe. Here is mine: For each liter @ 40% Maceration 72 hrs. approx 32g per L of botanicals 15g Juniper 7.5g coriander 0,9g Angelica root 0.9g Orris root 1/2 of fresh lime peel 1/3 of fresh lemon pe...

Re: gin blends
Trying to revive this old thread unless there is a more active one to discuss Gin recipes.
After trying the OEG, I now have my own blend macerating. It's been 48 hours so will most likely distill in the next few days.
Will share my recipe and results if some are interested.

Re: Wine Brandy from Chardonnay
Ok. Here is some info. I ran the spirit run yesterday. I had 2L of 45% low wines that I diluted to 3L @ 30% ABV. Tried to collect in small increments. I understand the temperature is not relevant in running the spirit run in my pot still but I kept track to get to know my equipment better. Chucked t...

Re: gin blends
Hi there, Planning to try many different iteration of gins/botanical over the next few months. I started with OEG as a base and now working on some recipe. I see on this website that people use anywhere between 15-35g of botanicals per liter. OEG is around 20-22g, so on the lower end. At the moment ...

Unless there was something seriously wrong with the wine, you should have no trouble selecting a nice heart cut. Search for Kiwistiller's novice guide to cuts if you are in a hurry to put something in your drinks cabinet. Thanks NZchris. The wine is very good. It fermented in barrel and the oaky no...

Re: Odin's Easy Gin
OEG is citrus heavy. I have been gradually adjusting my botanicals but I can say with even half the citrus it is still very citrus forward. It is still one of out favourites. I just macerated the peel for 48 hr and removed them before boiling; haven't added them to the vapour path and it's well bal...

I bought a hotplate before reading these threads... I guess my focus was too much on the still and not the heat source ;-) Therefore I have a cast iron electric hotplate 1500w but it does go on/off. It stays hot however. I do see a little fluctuation when I run a stripping run full heat where flow w...
