Re: Bain Marie Micro-barrels (aka my BadMo-eque bain marie barrel design)
Thought this might be well received here. One of my older Ten30 barrel of Ole Smokey Blue Flame moonshine finally reached 5 years old. After sampling it, I knew it was ready for bottling. This barrel was filled on May 6, 2018 and dumped on May 22, 2023. Barrel entry proof was 120 (proofed down from ...

Whistlepig recently released a maple wood baseball bat finished rye whiskey.

You might even be using the same wood they use.

Re: Oak mason jar lids.
I have not found 1/8th thick white american oak. Try Ooch Hardwoods out of Wisconsin. They have various thicknesses in all kinds of hardwoods. They have a 1/8x4x24 Quartersawn white American oak for like $4 plus shipping. Look under project wood. I have used their wood in the early days of my devel...

Re: Bain Marie Micro-barrels (aka my BadMo-eque bain marie barrel design)
I love it! Do you like to age your spirits with the barrels standing on their heads, so to speak? Or horizontal as I do? Also, how thick do you like the heads to be, when you are using your virgin weathered oak? I do keep mine upright and have the spirits rest entirely on the heads (i.e. vertical)....

I am working on finding a supplier of #6 poplar bungs.Oldvine Zin wrote: ↑Wed Aug 18, 2021 9:55 pm Nice work! The only thing that I would change is the silicone bung, maybe with an oak one or do what Otis does with his. Otis BMB bung.jpg
a stainless steel bolt as a bung.

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel
For what it’s worth, I don’t have any problem with discussing Clearmoon247’s barrels in this thread. I think this style of aging can be accomplished just as well by his method as by mine, without qualification. Everyone benefits when we share new ideas and new approaches. I do have a problem with i...

Bain Marie Micro-barrels (aka my BadMo-eque bain marie barrel design)
To preface, I have been designing my own micro-barrels for the better part of 4 years now, including redesigns, tooling, and streamlining the production methods to get where I am today. A few months ago, I was informed that a similar design has already been done. That was when I discovered BadMotiva...

Re: Apple Brandy Barrel Finished Whiskey
Sounds fun and expensive! What was the ABV going in and coming out of the barrel? Interested to see what your thoughts are on oaking at different time intervals (3mo, 6mo, 12+ months) and in particular whether 3 months made the blend better or “needs more time”. Did you save some of the blend in gl...

Re: Apple Brandy Barrel Finished Whiskey
How did you come by the barrel? i.e. did they advertise it on a website, or did you approach the distiller owner in person? I purchased it from www.barrelsdirect.com I was debating about which style of used barrel to purchase for finishing. In the end, it was either apple brandy or gin barrel. I th...

Apple Brandy Barrel Finished Whiskey
At the beginning of the year, I decided to step up my various whiskey experiments by making an apple brandy finished whiskey. I started by coordinating with a few people in my local community to have each person provide 1-2 bottles of either bourbon or rye whiskey to add to the barrel. Then, I purch...

Re: Barrel wax
The reason I recommend Gulf Wax is it is inexpensive, readily available, works on leaks for a barrel, and is food grade (its an ingredient in chocolate candy recipes). I think if you can get a good deal, bees wax is always a great option to use as well.

Re: Life of a Barrel
My first 5L barrel started off with bourbon white dog for 1.5 years before alternating for 2 months each cycles of honey then bourbon. My second 5L barrel began with gin and will probably get a nice blend of aged Rye whiskey. My 5 Gallon barrel started off as used rye whiskey barrel when I purchased...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel
Seems like the wood to spirit ratio would be a bit high at 850 ml. It looks like the wood surface area would be at least as much as the two 3/4 by 3/4 by 5 inch sticks I use on about 1600 ml. Have you tested one to see how fast they impart flavor and how it compares to other methods? I've done the ...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel
Good Evening Everyone, I am new to the board, but have been experimenting with creating my own Badmotivator style bain-marie's for the past 3 years without even knowing that it was a think. It's crazy how great minds come to similar solutions. Mine happen to use a bung punched into the top of the ba...
