temp control for mash

My barrels are in an uncontrolled outbuilding. I need to control mash temp. Im considering building a styrofoam box for the barrels, but what should I use for a heater? Waterbed heater? Aquarium heater? any suggestions?

Re: Is this a total failure?

so I was going to dump this but I decided to take one more shot. Yesterday morning I mixed up a starter with Champaign yeast (Red Star Cuvee) and repitched. Gave it a peek in the late afternoon and it was bubbling. This AM, 54 Degrees outside, I went out to check and to my surprise, the Cap has fall...

Re: Is this a total failure?

Im wondering with the Ph crashing that hard to 3 or below if my yeast was killed. Maybe i should add new yeast now that PH is back up to an acceptable level.

Re: Is this a total failure?

to answer a couple questions
Gravity readings done with a Hydrometer.
Malt added at between 150 and 160
Didnt taste before I added sugar
Gravity is still at 1.075
Mash does form a nice crust.

Is this a total failure?

Hoping im in the right place for this. 5 days ago I started a mash that seemed to be cursed from the start. Started 5 gal water, and 20 lbs. cracked corn. I had just gotten the mix to 200 degrees when I had to shut down for an issue. came back 5 hrs later. had 1 giant gelatious mass still at 160 deg...

water

my water source is very high in iron and lime. I can put a filter in to get rid of the iron, but what about running "soft water to get rid of the Lime? or will the hardness not bother? its damn good tasting water on its own. no smell of Hydrogen Sulfide.

wild plums

in a couple months the wild plum trees on my property are going to be ready for harvest. they are red, about quarter size, and quite tart and also very sweet. seems like they would be perfect for a run. My biggest concern is that they are very susceptible to some form of wild yeast and do seem to ro...

My first purchase

Since my old unit got messed up I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a 10 gal NG with thumper. Seems to be a really well made unit. Very excited to give a few things a try!

fermentation temps

Because I know that Mrs PC1 will never allow a vessel in the temp controlled house. They will be in the barn, subject to all of the various Day/Night, temp variations. What issues might I see arise from this?

Greetings all!

Hello! I have always had an interest in distilling/moonshine and have sampled a few in my travels. Some years ago I came across an old still in a house I was working in. it hadn't been used in 30+ years and I was able to buy it for $20. well the only info I could find at that time about how to use i...
