I got an aquarium pump from eBay (A shop in queensland I think) for around the $30 mark, which works just fine in my reflux jacket condenser (Keeps the condenser room temperature or so throughout the whole process)

I am wondering what would be the effect of using an alcometer on a sugar only wort pre-distillation? Theoretically there is no sugar: only water and alcohol (and only traces of other chemicals) so shouldn't it give us a reasonably accurate, or at least ballpark figure? Sambuca is one of my favourites so it was one of the first things I tried. I tried soaking star anise, a few peppercorns and some cinnamon stick in 40% for about a fortnight.
