Re: el cheapo keg "tapping"
lawdog, how does the 1 1/4" column seal against the keg? is it a just pressed against the viton seal and a "press fit" with the collar keeps it in place? your pictures are great. and beautiful dogs. Fester i use the viton seal back in there. it seals the same as it did with pressuriz...

Re: Baileys/Punkins Muck
figgered it out on my own this evening. you cant put the high test right in the eggs or they curdle. if its any more than 40-50% you get the cheese curds. once i diluted it back to 40% it worked great. just keep running the beater and pour it in slowly... man thats good stuff. didnt last one evening...

Re: Baileys/Punkins Muck
tried makin some today, and the eggs curdled instantly when i added the alc. tried to strain it all out with cheesecloth, but it just makes it have a grainy texture that doesnt sit well. the taste sure is good, but i need some more detail on the "whip" part of "whip 3 farm eggs"

Re: el cheapo keg "tapping"
theres no reason you couldnt use this to build a reflux still as well. you just need to use a piece of 1 1/4, then up it to whatever size you want. i didnt mic it, but im sure a 2" would be about right to fit the outside of the collar instead of using the 1 1/4 inside. you would need to leave a...

Re: Good pot still plans
if you are making a potstill on a keg, you dont need to buy anything extra at all. use 1 1/4 copper pipe. when u take the snap ring and valve/tube out, u re-use the top collar, seal, and snapring. slide 1 in pipe down over the pick-up tube (from the bottom) and push in/turn on the 3-tab lock to pull...

Re: first big wash with a couple Q's
ya i am shooting for 14%. when i say stall, i guess i meant finish. wrong wording. i dont check the gravity or anything. when its dry and bitter, and the yeast is done bubbling, i let it sit another couple days and run it. i didnt want to put all 75lbs in to begin with because ive had good luck with...

first big wash with a couple Q's
ive run a few small single distillations thru my pot still with good results. ive decided to just do a larger run so i can put the still away for a while. its a keg with 18" 1 1/4 dia column and 24" long 1" inside diameter jacketed condenser. i started my 40 gallon wash yesterday. 20l...

Re: Dual Stills on One Boiler?
how would you regulate the flow between the 2? vapor pressure will take the path of least resistance so only 1 still head will be doing anything anyway.

Re: flavor characteristics of stills.....
I suspect that you may be getting more unintentional reflux through that 12 x 3/4 column than expected... If you were going to make a single modification, that's where I'd suggest making it... I'm thinking more about diameter than length... Several members who make rum have posted their rigs which ...

Re: sour corn
clean dry corn should cost you about 4 dollars a bushel. (56 lbs but some places sell it 50lb/bag) my corn always smells a little bad when its ready, but i put it in a pot with water to cover it, and lightly boil it for about 3 hours, adding water as it needs it. after about 10 minutes, the starches...
Re: sour corn
makes sense. i suppose its much more like gardening than any part of distilling. in the garden, if it stays soaked and the seed gets no air, they will rot in the ground. they need to be in warm enuf soil to keep from rotting/damping off. if they are too deep, they cant get to the light, and they are...
Re: sour corn
ive had good luck with 20 lbs in a burlap bag. i leave it sit in the shade and spray it with a hose, then flip it over, a couple times a day. i tried starting it in sand a couple times. 20 lbs mixed in a wheelbarrow full of wet sand mixed up. 4 or 5 days later, i washed the sand thru a screen. messy...

Re: What Should I Do?
5g of dry yeast ain't a lot for a distilling ferment. Would help if you made a yeast starter, get the yeast up and running, before pitching it into the main ferment. it is the little packets from the winery for making up to 5 gallons, i got another one, figger it'd help to pitch it as well? 1/4 tsp...

Re: What Should I Do?
Heating water drives off dissolved gasses. If you put the hot wash into the fermentor (even splashing a bit) not enough air may be present to kick-start the yeast. If you knew the S.G. that could be a clue as well. I also don't see an addition of any acid to your wash... the only hydrometer i have ...

instead of starting a new one, ill post here, see what happens. i put a sugar wash together tuesday. 5 gallon glass carboy, 8lb sugar, 3.6gal water, 5g dry wine yeast, 1/4tsp nutrients. i use tap water, so i bring all the water and sugar to a boil for 20 minutes or so, then funnel in the tank. let s...
