Re: Still
Maybe if you have a larger ferment, if not then it's longer to do a 12 gallon run than a 7 gallon run. That's what he's saying with a larger ferment. Roughly speaking if you have 30 gallons fermented you'll end up with roughly 10 gallons or low wines and after doing the spirit run will end up with ...

Well, most of this is inaccurate. In general a larger boiler results in less time to produce a finished product (ie a few large runs instead of multiple small runs with inferior separation). Re: First strip runs... i think something aint right
My reflux column (8 gallon with a 7 gallon charge) has a 1650w element and takes about 1.5 hours and my cheap chinese pot still (9 gallon with an 8 gallon charge) I use induction @ 2000w and takes about 1.25 hours, so normally on propane you should do better than this, but of course this is mostly d...

Re: Still
13 to 16 gallon boiler is about perfect size IMHO for home use. This is true if combined with a 3"column and if no other variable dictates your choice. IE if you choose to go with 13+ gallons instead of 8 gallons, then you require more power, more voltage, more height, larger column, larger fe...

Re: Strange Twist of Fate!
I just ordered the other parts I will be needing to assemble my modular columns, I will wait until my return for purchasing the keg or boiler. The lead times are excessive (39 to 50 days) and the post office keeps them for 18 days after first delivery attempt. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000322...

After doing a proper cleaning runs with vinegar followed by a sacrificial fermented sugar wash. Re: Straining Wash, what to use?
Most of the time I rack, but when I need a faster option I will use a strainer similar to the one below, with a plastic milk bag holder the first half and the rest slowly pour it right through.

Well I guess fate put me on a different path than I thought I would follow. Last monday night I was browsing the different hardware stores websites, as I do once or twice a week, when my jaw just dropped, -65% discount on all the 2" copper pipes and fittings, so I decided to finish early on tue...

Re: Air stone in boiler?
Your reasoning is counterproductive, when distilling outside with a reflux column, most people will insulate the column and even the boiler to avoid heat loss, yet you want to do this intentionally by introducing the lower temperature ambient air?

I don’t mind the very occassional swig of 50% but I wouldn’t make a habit of it simply because I don’t enjoy it. . I agree with you on this! Cask strength rums and whiskys are sold at higher proof. It's up to the drinker to decide to proof it down or not. Absinthe is meant to be diluted with water....

I normally drink my neutrals and spirits straight 40-42% ABV, liqueurs between 30-35% ABV, but of course most people will mix their drinks and lower this, but in the past, every year i would purchase Arak and Absynthe, the first would be Kefraya at 50% ABV and the latter 45%, but some Absynthe go up...

Re: Mixing Copper with SS
Coefficient of linear thermal expansion for Cu is about 16 to 16.7 x 10^-6, Stainless 304 is 17.3 x 10^-6, Stainless 316 is 16 x 10^-6. So, if you have a 4 inch pipe joining copper to stainless, going from room temp to boiling water (68F - 212F), with the worst case coefficient differential, the di...

Plenty of experience around here on that topic, including my own; mixing stainless and copper is common. Same here.. and never had an issue with mixing.. what you have read will apply if there is no provision for expansion, but since there are joints with ptfe gasket, the joints become flexible.. M...

You haven't been listening. #1 is not going to run nearly as fast as option #2 or #4. It can't, physics. Just look at the 1/2" pipe coming out of the column and the short tube condenser it goes through. Option #4 will last just as long as #1if not longer and if something was to go wrong since ...

Re: Mixing Copper with SS
Something to keep in mind is the temps the metals are exposed to. We're only running stills in the 200F range. That sounds logical, only with temperatures a lot hoter would that have an impact I guess. You are over thinking things..calm down and enjoy the hobby. Thank you for those wise words.

Re: A choice between Stills
You can loosely pack the deflag with copper but when done it's not acting as a "plate" count as you might be thinking. This creates more cooling surface. Making the mesh like a heatsink with more contact area. It's essentially closing in more to the efficiency of the shotgun condenser by ...
