Re: Question about electric boilers
I was going to just plug the element ports and run on propane, but that would require me to rebuild my still head as the product outlet is WAY too close to the heat source. Keeping things electric seems to be the easiest and most economical way to get this up and running. It looks as if you could s...

Re: Yellow label yeast?
With all respect, the only time I used it was in a mixed batch of grains and I did not have any luck with it. Maybe separately, I don't know.

Re: Yellow label yeast?
I put oatmeal and barley in the batch, both known for being goop. I think wheat, corn and rice are probably the best to use with the Angel yeast.

Re: Yellow label yeast?
I distilled both batches of mixed grains yesterday. Both finished about the same. Honestly I'll not use Angel or Nuruk to "mash" anything besides short grain rice in the future. It left a ton of trub in the fermenter. I'll be re-distilling the combined batch again today for 2x vodka. It di...

Re: Yellow label yeast?
I have done oats, barley, wheat, rice and corn Friday, I raided the cupboard for expired oats, grits (corn), pearl barley and tossed it in a pot of boiling water along with a bunch of old rye bread (no preservatives) and some dried out cooked rice the old lady had hidden in the refrigerator. I cook...

Re: Rice Alcohol vs Sake! First experience.
I buy the Thai brand short grain rice in 50 lb bags for about a dollar a pound. I don't play with magic yeast balls either. I make Korean Soju and the results are spectacular with HTL and standard fermenting techniques. The rice wine has a very good taste when dry also. I know this is an older post...

Re: Anyone have any suggestions?
The best thing I ever did was to make a concentric LM and put a VM takeoff tee in the middle. Best of both worlds. I wouldn't waste my time with a Bokakob.

Re: Etching SPP with ferric chloride
Sure enough. I used the "5.40 lb. Medium Ceramic Abrasive Polishing Tumbler Media" on the marbles. That may be overkill on your SPP and coarse sand might not be so aggressive. They sell walnut shell also, but I've never had much luck with that.

Re: Alcoengine vs potstill
This corn came out at 17% using yellow label, unbelievable I know but that's where it's at any suggestions will be helpful Sarge It's not unusual to get a conversion of 16-17% using Angel yeast yellow label and sweet rice, so It's likely that you could achieve the same with corn. Nuruk (Korean vers...

There's a couple of homemade mosquito traps on youtube using 5 gallon buckets, a small fan and a lamp. Kind of a hillbilly clone of some commercial traps.

Re: New to column build
Most people using a reflux column have a vent (without pressure relief) to the atmosphere. This allows us to dial the cooling water down or up depending... I think most of us aim for a hot but slow trickle from the reflux coil return line to get a good reflux action. If you have vapors coming out of...

Is the cost of 6kg and a bit of cheap yeast worth all the trouble and time? Run it as is, learn the lessons and try again.

[/quote] Tree rats are fun with an air rifle, but sometimes I like to pop them with my suppressed 22/45 and subsonic rounds. In the back yard, in very limited for field of fire. Even with a bb gun. Wood can be dried naturally or kiln dried, I suppose oven drying is about the same, unless you believe there is some nuance missing in one or the other.

Re: Toast damp / new wood
I toast my oak sticks (1"x1"x4") in an oven at 380F for 2 hours. I'll say that between the toast and the char, the wood is pretty much dry.

Re: Modification Design Help
Most folks here will tell you to run your stripping runs pretty fast after collecting the fores and heads. After you reach into the tails, keep the better parts to blend back in before your spirit run. The chinese still works OK after you get rid of the silicone seals.

Have you used this still yet? What are you trying to improve on? I have this exact still, (before I started building my own) and it works pretty good right out of the gate.

Re: Heads and tails in rum...
In the pot still (spirit run), after the fores and heads are done, I'll open the pot and dump about a gallon of molasses in the pot to finish the run. I'll get a noticeable but subtle molasses smell and flavor in the rum. I do not keep any of the heads and discard most of the tails. What charge siz...
