Re: Cuts too wide?

The best tip I’ve read on here about a good whiskey tails cut is doing the “rubbing test” on your hands, allowing the ethanol to evaporate. The nasty stuff really rears it’s ugly head and will smell like dirty socks etc in an other wise “okay” jar. There’s an odd fine line between the good smell of...

Re: Implications of multi-distillations

Frenzy I turned the photo for you. Your still is just what we call a pot still here, column stills have packing or plates in the column. Good to see that your product outlet is a decent distance from the gas burner  good move safety wise. Most people with pots strip the wash first then run...

Re: Implications of multi-distillations

Thanks for the response. I thought perhaps there was some generalizable knowledge, regardless of setup. I'm a novice, I realize now that assumption was faulty.

Re: Cuts too wide?

Sorry if I’m being dense, but if I removed the heads and most tails the first time, wouldn’t there be a lower proportion of each the next time?

Implications of multi-distillations

Greetings. What are your thoughts (eg pros/cons) of various approaches: 1. Several stripping runs to a single spirit run 2. One stripping run combined with a new wash 3. Others? I’ve done the first but wonder if I’m loosing flavor. I’m planning on doing 2 soon but wonder if it will not be as pure/sm...

Re: Cuts too wide?

Hi all. I’m in a similar boat, went wide on the tails. Aged for a year and meh.

When diluted and re-run, would you expect much larger portion of hearts?

Re: Integrating rye or wheat in AG whiskey

Thanks for the responses. Still curious how the taste would differ if I replaced wheat for corn or malted wheat for malted barley. Thinking it will just need experimentation and that I’ll start with a makers mark type grain bill, approximately 70% corn, and about 15% each of malted wheat and barley....

Integrating rye or wheat in AG whiskey

I was thinking about experimenting with adding rye or wheat to my standard AG whiskey (basically NCHooch’s ). Any thoughts on how to , for example, add a bit of rye ? What I don’t get is, does it replace some of the corn? If so, would it be unmalted rye? A related question is, if you need sugars, do...

Re: NChooch's Carolina BourbonA

I did not do those things... time to up my game, it seems. Thanks Did you check your conversion with iodine? If it was totally converted 1.080SG is strong. What yeast? If it stalls probably will be low ph. Throw some crushed oyster shells in there and it will boil up showing it was needing calcium.

Re: NChooch's Carolina Bourbon

Curious, I’ve done a couple 5 gal stripping runs, stopping just below 10 abv and getting between 1/2 and 3/4 gal of product. Is that in line with y’all’s experience? Just curious if I need to refine my process.

Re: sweetfeed whisky

Thanks for reporting back on this! Ok gang, I just returned from Tractor Supply with the "NEW" All Grain Feed that comes in a brown bag now instead of the purple bag. EVERYTHING is identical on the PRODUCER'S PRIDE ALL GRAIN tag EXCEPT they no longer put Barley in it according to the ingre...

Anyone else notice that the infamous purple bag of all grain feed from Tractor Supply no longer exists on their webpage? Instead this grey/brown bag appears... https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/producers-pride-all-grain-feed-50-lb Why is TS messing with us? It look over 100 pages of comments...

Re: Apple Brandy Recipe

Hi there Cranky, thank you for sharing! I'm in the mountains of Virginia and I sometimes get lucky enough to run into locals who don't bother with their apple trees -- I too am a "freegan". Mind a few questions? in regards to ageing your brandy: 1. at what ABV? 2. what ABV do you tend to d...

Re: NChooch's Carolina Bourbon

Thanks for the great recipe! Would someone mind offering an opinion (also for a 5-gal still) -- I hope to use the ingredients I have, and wonder what order you would suggest adding them. -10 lbs flaked corn -2 lbs 2-row malted barley -2 lbs 6-row malted barley You think it best to just add all the b...
