Re: Details of bubble plates build parts?

Well I won't be trying to make the plates from stainless. I've never enjoyed working with stainless. There's obviously more research on my end. But I'm looking at 4 inch tower to process wash faster. With possibility as single run. Shadylane "My preference is bubble caps and make them big in di...

Re: Looking for anyone who's used the Thunder Group bain marie (Sold by Kitchway in the UK, but US made IIUC)

This is another reason why I've used odd asparagus steamers. Just make sure the handles aren't riveted. Holds about 2 litre, which is what I can get from a 30ish litre wash with two runs. I still aspire to fill my two spare 8litre barrels. But it won't be this year:( I have been looking again at the...

Re: Details of bubble plates build parts?

So is there any benefit to bubble caps? Or do they look pretty and work as well as perf plates? Think I'm looking for a simple solution and see 1.500 1.5mm holes off putting? On drilling the perf holes. Why don't people stack all of the plates as one, then drill marked holes? When I make my shotgun ...

Not sure really how well those would work? The angled edges may be an issue, maybe not or just needs a clamp. How much have you distilled? As I'm starting and get surprised on the time needed to produce reasonable amounts using my 45 litre boiler. Which gets hard fitting around work and home. Your m...

Details of bubble plates build parts?

Hi all, I'm uk based and have started to look at making 4 inch bubble plates. I've looked at various builds but missed any info on what parts people use for the bubbles and down comers. There are suggestions of using plasma cutter nozzles, but no sizes. I'm not sure where to go to find consumables f...

Re: Looking for anyone who's used the Thunder Group bain marie (Sold by Kitchway in the UK, but US made IIUC)

The asparagus barrels have been second hand about £5 each. For flanges ive thought of having a wire under the flare on the Bain Marie with a securing wire across the face to hold it in. Or possibly a second if you think the head is moving. Ive started looking at other forms of steel pans etc to see ...

Re: Looking for anyone who's used the Thunder Group bain marie (Sold by Kitchway in the UK, but US made IIUC)

Not sure? I was looking at badmo barrels as a way of long term aging. With little knowledge it was a way of practicing making badmoesc barrels. From what I read killer jars need to be aired regularly. My thoughts the wood did the work. Leave and try and forget as long as possible. Only other advanta...

Re: Looking for anyone who's used the Thunder Group bain marie (Sold by Kitchway in the UK, but US made IIUC)

Be carful when installing the heads. My first was to tight and burst the side of the 8 litre pot when filling with water. My second attemp I thought was looser. Head went in about 6mm before needing to be pushed in. But found the barrel had split after filling with cornflake whiskey. Thankfully it w...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

I've not tried tounge and groove router sets. But that's cause I'm cheap. If I was doing lots of barrels I'd look at probably making two router set ups and ensuring there accuracy. Changing out bits would work just needing accurate alignment.

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

I've used a 9mm flute bit. To cut the groove. Then alter cutter height to make the tongue. Really fidley and requires a router bench/table and you are sure the cutter doesn't move in the collet. I usually make one head at a time. So can tolerate the caffeine of set up. Also helps I've got access to ...

Re: Possibly a too tight of a fitting pre solder

Does everyone think solder is like glue? The bigger the gap and the most amount of glue makes for the strongest joint? From jewelery making and welding. The smallest joint and least amount of solder, filling the joint completely, makes for the strongest joint. If you can get a ferrule into a tube. I...

Re: Possibly a too tight of a fitting pre solder

I'd say you can't have a joint too tight. So long as you can get the ferrule in. Clean both surfaces of joint push in, then Flux joint and solder. I have the issue of my pipe is wider then my ferrules. I need to hammer in the pipe to get a tight joint, or make thin shims to get a tight fit. One adva...

Where to age badmo barrels?

Hi all. I'm about to do my first Whiskey. I have made a couple of badmo barrels to age in. Which brings the question of where to age the barrels. I'm trying to think long ish term. With the harder it is to check the less you will sample. I'm in Northern UK. Two places in thinking of are either in th...

Re: Vapor escape!!!!

As a note of optimism. You still is working (ish). Some pids can be set yo run on amps only. If yours can do this you should be ok to control the still with power out put only.

Re: What kind of still is this ?

Look on here for still designs. There are a couple of places to get parts for stills in the UK. Try searching distilling uk. EBay has some different manufactures but work out what you want first.
Building is possible. Takes time and requires equipment.
Good luck in your search

Re: How/why age?

Thanks. I found that day one.. Working tjhrpoufgh several years of posts yo fgind the ideas most agree on gets tedious.
There are posts on types of stills. Lots of disagreements of what's best but basic concept.
Aging, seems random. Maybe more reading to understand, for me.

How/why age?

Hi all, second introduction. Read quite a bit of the forum in the last few years. Just gone looking for aging basics? Why do you age? How long too age? Is they're a basic explanation of aging techniques? I'm not looking at nuclear aging super special shyte. Just what's the best starting techniques a...

Stainless oxide in still?

Hi all. During lockdown 1.0 to find something to do I started planning a 2" ccvm. Using a 40lt hlt . this meant either putting a big hole in the middle of the lid or buying a stainless bowl. Then all the shops shut. To get out from under my other half feet I had the not so bright idea of using ...

Greetings northish uk

Hi everyone.
Longtime lurker. First time posting. Brewed beer kits 10+ years. All grain 3 years. Looking for ideas of how to use apples from 12 apple trees (half standard) unfortunately there mostly dessert so the cider can be sharp.
Looking at getting parts together for a ccvm.
