Re: Questions for those that lauter

Im not sure on the water. I used a Beersmith to calculate it for me.... but I had to calculate with Flaked Corn instead of ground cracked corn..... I agree on the Pumps occasionally acting up....but I haven't had a brew day ruined. I have a 3 kettle, 20 gallon beer system with 2 pumps. Way over kill...

Re: Stock pot still.. regular lid or bowl

I as well us the original flat lid. It fits really well.... And I have a large pot. 20 Gallons. I made a gasket made of Bristol board from the craft section wrapped in Teflon tape. Only made it once, and it still is working perfect, other then some stains. I use 24 large binder clamps all around and...

Re: Questions for those that lauter

Hey So I recently did a all grain corn/ barley mash and lautered. It was my first attempt, so my efficiency was pretty good, but missed my final gravity because I simply ended up with about 20l too much wash. I used around 32 lbs cracked corn, ran through my grain mill... mashed in with boiling wate...

Re: better cuts on a pot still ?????

I can only comment from a Pot Still point of View.... and everything you mentioning works for me.... but would be irrelevant with a reflux still. For my pot still, by lowering the power, it directly relates to output flow. And output flow directly relates to how much smearing there is. Best case sce...

Re: Questions for those that lauter

Im really interested in how you make out with this. As an all grain brewer, I too am determined to try lautering. I have no problem fermenting on the grain. However the convenience of having a nice clean wash in the fermentor can make the distilling steps so much easier. I have lautered barley mashe...

Re: Ted's Fast Fermenting Vodka

Ive been using this recipe for a couple years now exclusively. I do it all on a pot still, but I Strip it and then run it mulitple times (3-4) diluted very low with clean water. It takes a little longer then a reflux would overall, but I end up with good yeilds and as neutral a product as I've ever ...

Re: Why do you distill ? Cost or Quality ?

Where I live, a 60 ouncer of cheapest crap booze cost $65, no exception. So definitely enjoy making it for $5 a bottle. However, now I prefer homemade. Enjoy the flavour more and the quality.

Re: Ted's Fast Fermenting Vodka

Ive fermented TFFV a few times at higher ABV.... If its the first generation, I found it just takes proportionately longer.... Instead of 4 days, 6 days, etc. However, I would assume this is only accurate until the ABV gets up to the point where the yeast struggle. TFFV was designed to be low ABV an...

Re: Good off the shelf power controller

I recently did a build using Auber Instruments controls. It is also available as a prebuilt unit. I highly recommend Auber. I have been using their PID's for over 10 years in my smokers, without a single failure or replacement. Been using their power regulator PID combo for over a year doing All gra...

Re: 1ST DISTILLING IN PROGRESS

Sounds like you have a lot of oils come over. I personally don't know how to clear cloudy distilate, other then to mix with a higher proof spirit, or to run it again. I do know that if you dilute it, you may end up with a lot more cloudiness as the proof goes down. Also, good Idea in taking lots of ...

Hey Welcome aboard. I too have a few years under my belt doing All Grain Brewing, but the transition to making Alcohol is very easy. And the good habits you learned with sanitization and fermentation will go a long way in making a good product.

Re: Glad to come aboard

I highly recommend trying Teddys Fast Ferment Vodka or Deathwish Wheat Germ... they are similar. I consistently can get it dry to 0.994 in a 4-5 days or less, cool it to clear, and you can be running it inside a week or slightly longer. Enjoy the hobby. I love Jess's videos too. Seems like he relies...

Re: Pot Still Vodka- 5x distillation, positive experience

Just wanted to post a continuation to this experiment.... After the last batch of TFFV, I repitched 10 bags of sugar on the yeast cake, buffered a little, and let it ferment out. It took a little longer, and only dried out to 1.002, vs .992 from the first run, but ended up at 8.2% abv. Stripped 110l...

Re: Column take off size

Thanks for all your advise. I honestly am still mildly confused with all the options for reflux design. I built my 2" pot still, and have the ability to do a 2" CCVM... But would like to go larger. But I think constructing it myself may be outside my skill set. Here in Canada its not super...
