Re: Lemon Garlic Shrimp Kabob

Just made this dinner tonight as I wanted to cook shrimp but didn’t want to BBQ outside. Turned out really good but added a little more salt after as to cut the lemon flavor a bit. Lemon Garlic Shrimp Kabob INGREDIENTS: * 1 1/2 pounds medium shrimp, peeled and deveined * 4 lemons, thinly sliced and...

Re: A word of caution when buying parts.

Mine have a hole, cast SS, never done much more than hand tighten them, the weight of the condenser (weight supported shotgun) takes up any possible slack or possibility for leakage during heating, if there even is any.

From memory on all my bits, about €300. I’ve a 50L keg pot with a hefty shotgun condenser. Most ferment stuff I bought second hand and the still/condenser itself was made for free.

Re: Turning Whiskey Feints "Neutral"

That’s not being over cautious at all. In Hazloc or ATEX installations this could be dealt with by use of “increased safety” principles. Get a shaky live or hot wire that touches or arcs the still and you have a potential bang. Best case is that it shorts to earth and trips with no consequences. In ...

Re: Spirit run water volume

You would need enough stripping runs to ensure when diluted that your element is covered after your potential yield is removed. Also consider diluting with fresh wash to add a little more flavour rather than diluting with water. Edit after NzChris comment below. For my whiskeys I do 3 strips and sto...

Re: Electricity / Spark management when distilling indoors - can lights be on?

Once your area is properly vented the risk is minimised and minimised further by the fact that there should be no leaks. Any vapour escape from cooling problems would be quickly identified and still shut down. Ethanol vapour is also heavier than air so it will sink to the ground rather than up to an...

Third strip today I had 60% full and the puke started again. Went to half power (2kW) and let it run for 30 minutes (experimenting in between with partial and full load) and after the 30 minutes a normal strip. Somebody might have already mentioned it. But what was your gravity SG and FG? I have ru...

That happens to me when I heat up too fast Heated up at full 4kW power. What I always did for sugar runs but clearly all grain is different. When I switched to half power it was fine. I wonder once almost at temp if I switched to half power and let run for a while until things settle down then up i...

My first.. Puke

Not sure if a puke or flood but stripping my 1st all grain today it came out of the condenser like a river. I'd had the pot about 75% full. Left the runoff for the next strip and put in a knob of butter and all went well. Second strip almost ready to start dripping as we speak.

Similar enough to this . Previous ferments were 2 strips (30l low wines) one day and a top up with the leftover wash (5-10l) to complete the spirit run in a 50 L keg the next.

Good to know! I have been trying to decide between a shotgun or liebig, I currently have a worm and flake on a 6 gallon copper pot, everything made from scratch and it works fairly well, but I do need to circulate the water towards the middle of the run, not a big deal, makes a bit of a mess, need ...

Just my take on this ..shotguns condensers where hardly ever used or seen before people started building Flutes / Bubblers. It's more than big enough to knock down 6Kw of steam And steam is harder to condense than alcohol vapor I also have a liebig of about the same length that's 1" inside a 1-1/2 jacket. Both are similar in knock down power but I'd recommend the liebig over the shotgun. Can I ask why you prefer th...

I used 125 g per 70l ferment (normally on a sugar head I'd pitch 250 for the same amount and take 2 weeks plus at summer at 18C ish temperatures). Maybe time to relax on the yeast, last check this morning on temp was about 20c.

My first all grain. Have about 140 litres (35g) of 100% malt barley and about 15% peat. Fermenting off the grain and reusing the spent grain in a UJSSM style sugarhead with maybe 6th gen backset from previous runs. All grain has a sg of 1.066 and sugarhead 1.070. That's the way to go pulling the su...

Making a roasted barley (Thanks 8Ball) sugar wash based on UJSSM, word for word except barley instead of corn.and using what I think is a 5th gen backset from Odin's cornflake whiskey. First unroasted barley run was amazing so can't wait to see how the roast turns out.
