Re: Closing up the shed...

Good for you. If it were me, I would take some time and really think about convenience vs escape. Might seem really good to have a shop at the other side of the property. Might suck when it’s been raining for a week. Also think about resale. A “shed”, that can easily be turned into a garage or pole ...

Like everything else, this will come down to money. If they can figure out how to tax you heavily on items designated for the purpose, then it will pass.

Re: Looking for a good and easy Whiskey recipe

Easy is relative. As you can see, an “easy whiskey” around here is like asking BBQ guys about brisket. But we don’t “know” you and your skill set, equipment, still, space or experience. But we might be able to guess. My advice. Go pick a tried and true recipe that “appears” simple to you. Any of the...

Welcome aboard DB, You are correct, it’s a big rabbit hole. And the required reading may seem like a mountain. But When you reach the top it will be well worth it. My two bits of advice. Keep your wallet in a drawer when reading or looking at websites—for awhile. Practice a tried and true recipe fro...

Re: Yeast

My suspicion is you have had a ph drop and your yeast have gone to sleep, unless you are using something for a ph buffer. We need more details. Turbo is trash and will not help you. My advice is to go learn how to make UJSSM, or Sweetfeed whiskey from the tried and true recipes. Go practice on those...

Re: Is there a "first aid kit" for distilling

Spare 2” tri clamp gasket, prepped and ready in case mine “disappears” in my shed. I’m confused… what exactly do you have to do to prep a tri clamp gasket? I just use them (PTFE of course) as they come, so the only prep is opening the bag. A tri clamp gasket is “double” sided to fit in between two ...

All of the above for sure, especially hydrometers. Ph strips as back up for meter. Spare 2” tri clamp gasket, prepped and ready in case mine “disappears” in my shed.

Re: Strange thing with vodka

When you are playing around on the border line of the freezing point of a liquor, a degree of temperature or proof either way It all sounds a bit like “Jacking “ . Separating Alcohol from water by freezing . I think this is exactly what is going on. And “mixing” will have zero effect. Essentially t...

This thread has been specifically aimed at a sugarhead similar to UJSSM. However many here have done this as an all grain.

Re: Jack Daniel's barrel houses causing black mold backlash

I feel for the residents, but it’s simple, huge tax dollars and re-election. Those local boards and councils aren’t getting their fingers dirty on this. They will push plenty of paper, spend a million or two “investigating” and simply bury it.

Post a pic of that copper reflux still. “Old” is relative. Ancient stills of yesteryear we might be able to help sweat out the details on. Lot of junk out there. Hate seeing you spend energy chasing ghosts with a POS.

300 pounds will buy a lot of parts or copper that will outperform and be easier to run than that. Me—I wouldn’t get near it.

Re: Water - Ideal additives after osmosis

My suggestion would be to research the mineral content or mineral profiles of areas close to in the area of those distilleries. You might find it with county or state agencies. From there it should be simple math to build your parts per million per gallon. However finding the minerals that will diss...

Re: One & Done or Spirit Run

If you literally cannot tell the difference either way, here is just my guess. You need to slow your heat up time down and you need way more jars for cuts as Chris indicated. Try 1/2 pint jam jars. 2-3 cases. So my advice on your next run. Strip—toss a 1/2 pint foreshots per boiler, strip to zero%. ...

I keep types separate and run feints as it’s own run. I also don’t recycle heads. I find they contaminate a feints run too much. When I build my LM, then I will use heads for nuetral.
