Some things to consider when making Bourbon

Id like to just put a little tip in the pot for those interested in making a high quality bourbon. And nobody get offended either, because Ive been hearing BS about the subject of bourbon for years so and I didnt read it on this forum. There is lots of good info here! With that said, the first tip is:Ma...

It depends. If the fitting was made for drinking water lines and such, then yes its fine to use.If it wasnt made for drinking water lines, there may be a chance of it having some lead in it.Most people will just soak a brass fitting in some vinegar and 3% hydrogen peroxide to get rid of the traces of l...

Funny you say that.My experience was very similar. There was plenty of water flowing during the winter and spring, but once summer hit.....there was only a few puddles and some mud.Of course it was also a pretty small creek.

Yeah those are well made stills and they will work.I have to give them credit too....they have a few pretty nifty designs.BUT,for as much money as any of them are selling for,you could build 2 bigger and better stills on your own.Just learn a bit about still making and you will be able to build some...

The only thing brewers yeast from the grocery store or health food store is good at is getting you healthy. It wont ferment anything. But it does have a pretty good nutty flavor.Try it on grits.

I dont know how big your still is,but if its something like a milk can,you could get a big cast iron skillet to lay between the still and the flames.Ive done that before and the cast iron is great at holding heat.Or if its to big for a 14 inch skillet, get a sheet of steel.Ive never tried a vegetable...

A ss boiler is not second best.A lot of a boiler is covered with mash anyway and the vapor never touches it.A ss boiler is just as good if not better than copper, and your spirits will be just as good as long as you have copper for the steam to touch everywhere else.My advise is to get a ss boiler an...

Try some food grade unsulphured mollasses. If your sure your not burning anything, then its the feed grade mollasses giving it the burnt flavor. And the flavor may improve a little bit,but it wont go away with aging.

What kind of heat source are you using? If its an open flame, you may want to try putting a sheet of steel or copper between the still and the flames. Also, make sure your still is cleaned out.

Dont run a still in the woods unless you have too and you are capable. Its a pain in the butt if you dont know exactly what your doing and your going to get dirty and not have fun.And dont bother with trying to figure out some elaborate setup to get water flowing to your condensor with siphon action ...

my advise is to forget about the thermometers, and if you must use a jug for the thumper use a real cork for the seal. But a better idea would be to use a one gallon mason jar as the thumper.

Distilling is an art,not a science.I dont use thermometers and I dont think anyone should rely on them.Having one isnt bad,but dont rely on them.As with everything, there is a balance.Dont rely too much on science and dont get carried away with being an artistic "master distiller" that does...

Well, assuming soldering is impossible, youve comlicated things for yourself.I assure you,if you can brush your teeth, you can solder. There nothing to it! All you need to do is clean the joints your going to solder, apply flux, apply heat, and then apply the solder.First I usually wipe the joints down wit...

Look, copper is very pretty, conducts heat very well, and has superior distilling abillities -BUT,SS will do you just fine. You wont notice a difference in the quality of the finished product just as long as you have a lot of copper elsewhere. And believe me,stainless boliers are easier to clean, and with...
