One pointer: dextrose is a waste of your hard-earned cash. Table sugar works the same and costs a fraction of the price.
Yeah - Not really! I can get Dextrose at almost the same price.

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

I like what you're doing here Jack, always question the status quo. Good healthy discussion coming from it too, nice one Hey man. Yeah look, some people take offence when someone questions their methods, and I certainly mean no offence at all. I love the fact that people are willing to share and me...

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

PoorBoyJack, what exactly is your process? You aren't giving a lot of details. Are you doing any cuts? The way you are cutting and blending could account for why you can't tell the difference. No! This is the T500. Drop the first 200ml, and run it till it ends. When I first started, I could taste a...

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

Commercial vodka nearly always has more heads than home distilled, so it's not a surprise your friends like yours better. I gather you're telling us that your AC filtered Turbo is about as good as your unfiltered All Bran and you are happy to pay the extra. Or is there something else? No... Never s...

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

Having to use AC to clean them up is probably the most obvious reason Turbo's get a hard time around here. A nice clean wash doesn't need it unless you don't know how to run a still and can't do decent cuts. But again... are you talking pot still or reflux? I run both. I can get very good product f...

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

Doesn't matter, you need to make cuts on any batch still, be it pot or reflux. No matter what reflux design. Any given ferment will produce congeners that largely come over in different parts of the run. Try it for yourself, collect in a number of small jars and smell and taste them. Decide what to...

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

Sorry guys.... I am going to disagree with you! The T500, run as per the manufacturer's instructions (as I have stated above) produces very good neutral! AND... it's not just my opinion. I have lots of mates who have tried it and all agree. In fact, we did a test where I lined up 4 commercial Vodka'...

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

I expect from reading your OP that you are using carbon and filters. Is that correct? Yes and no. Yes, I use them in the Turbos, as I wanted to be true to the directions. So in the Turbo I used the Carbon, then the clear, and put it through a filter. In the All Bran for example.... No Carbon, no Cl...

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

Thanks all for the input. Can I ask... are you guys all referring to Pot or Reflux still? Because I can't get anything to taste much different (just a little) when put through the reflux at 52 degrees C. It all just comes up clear and neutral. Yes, there is a slight difference in taste between the A...

Re: I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

Yep. I could taste a slight difference. I can even taste a slight difference from the start of the run to the middle. BUT... once it's mixed to a favourite tipple, there is no difference. LOL! Only when I drink it straight, and that's not often!

I know the turbos get a hard time, but why?

So I have been experimenting over the last few weeks to try and get a better understanding of things, and I have some interesting results. All through this thread there is the common rhetoric to dump the turbo yeasts etc, and go into the Tried and True section, and do it all a certain way. I am wond...

Re: Tech question re saddles in a T500

Thanks Bill, Just some feedback (from someone like myself that is new to the game and spending hours trying to learn - Which I love), saying something like... Re: Tech question re saddles in a T500

Ok... Sorry - re my terminology. Still learning all the terms.

So, the last tip that I got "you can never have enough copper" should be ignored in this case?

I get that it goes to removing sulphates etc... So when is enough, enough? How much copper is enough, and why?

Ok... So I can source the copper saddles - and not to expensive. Would it be worth changing all the saddles to copper?? My condenser is copper too!

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Well I am going to make it in the next day or so, I’ll let you know.

I’m going to start with 21L. Generally with all the turbo recipes it’s 21L for 6Kg of sugar, and this is close to that.

Will keep you posted.

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

That’s a great calculator mate. BUT it does not advice the amount of water at the start.

I put in that I want a total of 25L volume and get all the other data, but no starting water qty. I am thinking it’s going to be around 21L but I am guessing.

Cheers

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Hey all,

So I had some success with the all bran wash, so on to the next crack.

I’m looking at dropping this down to a 25L wash, and so I hope get the qty right.

I am just going to divide everything and follow the instructions.

Wish me luck.

Re: All Bran Recipe

OK the report is in. I watched the batch all day today and no activity. Took an FG and she was sitting at 1.000 Opened the lid, no fizz. Just a nice yellowy liquid - so bugger it, I ran it. I must have got the ingredient qty wrong. I pulled out just on 1L of 90% from a total volume 17L of wash. So i...
