Helped a buddy do a 4-plater rum run. 13 gal transformed into ~8L of hearts + another couple L of feints.

Re: Wheated bourbon
The mop wringer was a game changer for me. I can squeeze 40 gallons in about 45mins. I just give it a week or so to clear after squeezing and it goes in for the stripping run pretty clear already. I'm out of "spare space" in my brewing lab. I have consigned myself to the fact that I'll be...

Re: Yellow Label Angel Yeast & Rum Yeast
I'll answer, honestly being half ignorant on it, but molasses definitely has unfermentables. I'm not sure the impact of using Gluco amylase or YLAY (as far as being able to convert what is otherwise unfermentable and/or end product's taste).

It very well could be clumping oils. I tried getting the best pictures I could. It’s hard to get a clean shot of some tiny black spots floating around in the Carboy geeze :sarcasm:  It all smells fine. Infection is welcome in many parts of the hobby, I’m not too worried about running it. C'mo...

Re: Yellow Label Angel Yeast & Rum Yeast
FWIW: I use YLAY exclusively for A/G mashing now... mostly because I'm lazy! You CAN do sugarheads on it!!! I would add that using it for rum is a "waste?" Since rum is basically a sugar wash, DADY will do ya fine (and their are others yeasts with ester characteristics). Save the YLAY for ...

P.S. Rubberduck, your thread on LME was also one that I read before beginning this adventure. I found your description very useful and I hope by following Still Stirrin's suggestion I can avoid some of the massive puke you experienced. Learning to tame the puke is all part of the learning curve. Th...

It’s really coming on now and has a nice flavor of the parent base without the sugar bite and has a much more rounded flavor. It has really transitioned and is very illustrative of what some time and oak bring to the table. It’s also demonstrating the value of doing a sugarhead on a spent mash. Eve...

Re: MASSIVE grain sale - Pacific Northwest
Orders less than a pallet are accepted if pick-up is local at Stout Tanks. I checked again today and the checkout system allows it. So if you can pick up in Portland it's an option. After the sale ends then grains will be handled by GW Kent (Michigan I believe). GW Kent sells those reasonably price...

Re: How to or not sell a still
As I understand it, it's not illegal to have a still, or buy/sell one. Clawhammer, Brewhaus, MileHi, etc... would have all gotten busted.
I bought a used Brewhaus rig on Ebay after the seller asked this same question on Reddit. There were a few watchers, but no one besides me bid on it.

I used a half gallon in a 23 gallon mash. My water comes in at 7.0 consistently. I really don't do any worse conversion wise when I don't use backset. So Deplorable, if I read your post correctly, you're adding a smidge of backset from previous same recipe to the boiler charge? Is that on stripping...

AWESOME! Thank you! What "setting" or temp does the digiboil need to be at during the run? Just full blast? As mentioned by Howie above, just set it to "max" or in the Digiboil's case 212F. Vapors will come off starting ~170-180F in the boiler. For my rig, the head temp is usual...

Duck, I have a quick question about your setup. Could I Start my spirit run by Turning on Both Elements to heat up the mash faster. Then right before its at 150 turn off the 500w element and just use the power controller to run that element? Also, is there a certain "setting" i need to us...

Helped a buddy with a "new to him" rig for a rum run. ~11 gal of "shoofly wine" [wink, wink] through 4" column with 3 plates. 6 hrs to assemble, leak check, heat up, & complete. ~11x500 ml of 75-85% ABV + 2.3 L of tails. Airing out for 2 days & then will help him mak...

I also brew quite a bit of beer, and usually just dump the grains out back for the deer. Do you get decent flavor out of the 2nd use of grains using them this way? This is just my 2nd batch doing this, but I don't see it being much different than doing a sugarhead on a whiskey wash (other than smal...

Fyi for Steelers_stiller - if you follow this recommendation above be aware that each of those 1500w elements will need to run on a separate circuit. If you run other appliances on any of those circuits, you will want to turn them off while stilling. If your shed is like mine you don’t have easy ac...

Re: Advice for my first still setup
There's another thread around here talking about those Kent kegs. No negative reviews, but you will definitely need to be careful on length of elements and/or consider ones that "curve" so they don't touch. Also, if you're already dropping the $$$, go 3" or 4" column. That keg co...

2-3 plates are good for rums/whiskey/tequila if time savings for one-and-done runs is what's most important to you. I have a buddy with a 4"x6 plate rig, & we run 3 plates for flavored stuff. It's aging well. I cannot say for certain it's better or worse than double distillation. We haven't...

Re: Thumper contents
+1 to advice above. How full is the thumper at the end of your run? And is the wash completely done (i.e. 1.000 SG or less)? If you're running low & slow, energy into the boiler may not be the problem, but residual sugars may be??? I run a double thumper set up: 20% ABV (feints + wash) in 1st, 4...

Yes seems like a good price, I guess less than half what I paid though I wanted the extra watts. The electrical connection looks a little different. Re: Thumper question
You can do one-and-dones if you have a thumper. Not quite a true 2x distillation, but if you run it correctly & make strict cuts, you end up with a very good product.
