It might be easier with a conical to use an insulated chamber or box, an old fridge works well.

Re: No Mash No sugar

I followed the instructions as written and continued to stir for the first 5 - 7 days and activity pretty much stopped by 10 days but I found like a film of like fat forming on the surface so I siphoned off into another container, let settle and run it. I haven't used it again since as the wash had ...

Re: low alcohol content low wines

I am wondering if the yeast died due to heat then how much sugars were left? did you take a gravity reading? Is there anything left to salvage? In hind sight maybe you could have cooled to correct temp and pitched more yeast. I am thinking anything left in the fermenters and the backset from the str...

Re: Great way to alert me product coming out of condenser.

Yeah Nah, if you need something to alert you product is coming out its too late. Your signature line suggests you monitor temperature at several places on your still and that will tell you when product is about to start unless you are not in the room or asleep. I really don't see a need for it. Is i...

Re: How long should a 30 liter / 8 gallon reflux spirit run take?

The simple answer is roughly 4 to 14 hours, depends on your still. The type of reflux still, the type of packing and the power available among other factors will affect how long the run will take. You should allow all day so that you don't run out of time. The collection speed also depend on similar...

Made a new 3/4 over 1/2 inch Liebig to go with my new 2 inch 3 foot column. Just need to make a RC and my new CCVM will be ready for the cleaning runs. May have gone a bit overboard with the length but it fits where I will use it. Might have to upgrade the boiler, I don't know if 1300 watts will dri...

I would just cut the plugs off the cords, ditch the sockets and hard wire the cords in. You could remove the sockets and screw a plastic plate over the hole or just disconnect them and leave them there.

If it was me I would go higher on the barley and lower on the rye, I'm not sure but the quantities seem a little bit low. Even the water, for a 10l still you want 8l of wash so if you are straining you will need to start with 10l of water. Generally for a whiskey you would do a strip and spirit run ...

I have a question about volume. This is from the OP: So, for 40 liters of wash. Do I just use 40 liters of water in total ? Or the overall vo...

I would say that has no chance of working, maybe with twice the number of turns and the whole lot soldered on it may have a chance but it would be easier to just make a Liebig.

I think you might get a pretty low yield with such a small amount of grain. I'm using 10-15 kg in 50 L, and it seems thicker is better. No need to boil the corn, if you're happy with a lower yield. My experience was that a soak in hot water or backset to fully hydrate the corn is all it takes. I am...

Re: charred would...amount needed

Chips are the quickest way to age unless you nuke age but don't give as good a flavour. Use less than you think you need, you can always add more. It depends on the chips but you could start with 1/4 cup to a gallon and check every couple of days, could be ready in 2 weeks. Don't go too high on ABV ...

The temp inside the still pretty much controls itself. For a stripping run you need just enough coolant flow to knock down the vapour but for a spirit r...

Don't know much about Gin but in my little pot still if I run 40% low wines the output starts at about 81% but if I run 30% low wines I start at about 79%. Not much difference. Of course if it starts higher it holds high longer.

The temp the wash boils at is governed by alcohol concentration in the boiler, you cannot control that it will slowly rise during the run as the concentration decreases....
