Re: Angel Yeast Question
Yeah, Howie, I usually do a rough correlation between my low wine yield and what OG that would require, just as sort of a back-end efficiency check. Usually with all grains it indicates a little higher than the OG reading I actually got. Figured you'd do about the same with YLAY. Vol of alc in liter...

Totes ship very well. Glass in the same volumes not so much. SS would elevate the pricing further. Business is business. Hobby distilling isn't business... Another Chapter in the Saga of Blue Boogers
AKA blue distillate. Was running along fine but a little slow and it was getting late so I decided to shut down for the night. Turned off the heat and the water and left the head assembled. Figured it would either be fine or be an experiment. Well, it was an experiment. The first jar off the next mo...

Re: Ted's Fast Fermenting Vodka
This recipe for me was charging away until around 1.010 in 2-3 days and then slowly getting the rest of the way to 0.990 over the next 6-7 days. For the next batch I added a half tsp of epsom salts (for a 60 ltr wash) and the whole thing got to 0.990 within 4 days. A happy result and maybe that mig...

Good policy Geoff. Unfortunately, when someone adds a switch to these machines, they don't include lock-out devices. Unplugging them is the only way to be 100% safe.

Re: Yellow Label Angel Yeast & Rum Yeast
I ordered some Yellow Label Angel Yeast to try to recover an incomplete conversion with Booner’s Casual All Corn; specific gravity was only 1.05 and there’s a lot of fluffy starch in the bottom of it. I'm very skeptical of that number. I get low numbers like that, but the actual yield is greater. I...

A picture of a small scale grain crusher is shown. They are available on eBay and other venues for between $150 and $300. Typically, you will have to add an on/off switch Please don't add an On/Off switch to a grinder. The lack of a switch is a safety feature. Imagine what would happen if you had y...

To get better readings from litmus paper, dip them in liquids of known pH.

Have any of you used a feeler gauge to adjust the plate clearance?
I wonder what the minimum clearance would be, given a size of the feed.

TB, you're sounding like IBM's helpdesk! :D SMF, that vid was alright, but Jeff didn't seem much further along with it than me. Mostly I'm concerned about the corn not getting 100% powdered. Picked up a Chinese steel burr mill and I'm not sure how to adjust it for grinding corn.
Do you adjust it down until the plates lock together then back it off? If so, how much?

Re: Stuck fermentation
I'm coming to the conclusion that unless you can test it each time and accurately adjust it, you shouldn't use tap water. Water companies often add a lot to keep a Flint Michigan situation from happening. Maybe they do this all the time, maybe they don't. Maybe it's just a quarterly exercise or a bi...

Here's a vote for external heating. Less chance of scorching and you don't need to clear your mash as thoroughly.
