Re: any instructions or run through for T500

Even here, I see old myths still being banded about, so let's correct a couple. First running in pot mode does NOT damage the plastic cap. How can it? The vapour temps are about the same.. The higher temps ONLY relate to the cooling water temperature and NOTHING ELSE, so when you talk about being ho...

Re: My first try at a bubble plate column

While these might work ok with a pot still they may not with a reflux. I use a single plate with my reflux mostly as its nice to see what's going on inside but its going to be difficult balancing those with a reflux and to be honest there are better ways of improving the distillation. I would drill ...

Copper sulphate most likely from dirty copper in your still, bin it as it is toxic (wont kill you but).. Empty and clean your still and packing with citric acid...

Re: pH meter

I bought two cheap ones off ebay, the first failed to work from the off, the second gave wildly varying readings and also went back. I then spent £40 on a half decent one which seemed to work for a few weeks then went faulty and that too was returned. So now its back to the litmus paper which is far...

Re: Making the dreaded T500 safe

If the boiler crumples, it crumples suddenly and a lot with a loud bang and without warning.. First hand experience but it wasn't a thumper that did it,it was me backflushing the T500 column with cold water from my pumped flow regulator while hot and the lid still clipped on, stupid or what.. I did ...

Re: Novice Guide for Cuts (Pot Still)

Howdi yall So i have been destilling for about a year now, runing reflux still in pot mode, concidering trying reflux again. So i am running rum, 12.5kg molasses at 43%sugar and 10kg sugar inverted to 4l all added to 76lt water. So this comes out 10.7% about. I make cuts on smell and taste more bec...

Re: Crushed Oyster shell

An alternative is egg shells.. Steve, can you tell us how they work, and how to use them (including how many needed for a 5 gal mash), and other factors? Thanks! I'm not very scientific with it I'm afraid, Any shells from eggs I wash out and place in a a bowel in the oven baking them when we next d...

Re: Turbo Yeast, Birdwatchers and distillation questions

You are right of coarse and any leaks in use the still should be shut down, but that's not what I was referring to and perhaps I should have been clearer but I cant edit it now .. By leaks on the T500 its generally accepted that it leaks while inverted (which is what I meant) when cleaning and not l...

Re: Turbo Yeast, Birdwatchers and distillation questions

As I only use it for neutrals I leave them in, the only time I remove them is if I want some transfer of flavour but I use my 2" pot for that anyway and often for stripping as its faster. Depending on the wash I often only do one run anyway. If you are new to the T500 its always worth trying a ...

Re: Turbo Yeast, Birdwatchers and distillation questions

You can strip with the T500, just drop the water flow into the low 60's or where it works without the product getting hot in the outflow and it will run faster no problems. Don't forget you are NOT limited to that expensive bling dome thing and tiny condenser, (can you tell I'm not a fan) For a few ...

Re: Making the dreaded T500 safe

I'm pretty new to distilling and may me a little of the mark so do correct me if I'm wrong. Without the vent hole in the cap and the cap sealed there may be situations where problems could occur for the novice or someone who makes a simple mistake. As you say the system is open and fine while being ...

Thanks guys, yes read til ive gone cross-eyed, will be doing a vinegar run followed by a sacrificial run then hopefully get down to some good stuff. Another newbie here..

Have been making wines for many years but totally new to distilling so a lot to learn. Have a pot still arriving tomorrow and my first sugar wash on the go for an initial trial to make some vodka which I want to infuse with some flavours and trial a whisky flavouring. Just trying to keep things simp...
