Re: Calculate cost of running the rig!
I have written down my meter reading at the start of the run and again at the end of the run. I'm usually not doing anything else, so what ever the meter says, that's about what I used for that run. The hard part is to remember to check the meter right before and right after the run.

Husker said "She was less than enthusastic." I totally understand. I wouldn't want to share my seat on an IB ride either. I vary my position as far forward, way back, left cheek, right cheek, all trying to find a spot that isn't sore.

Changing temperatures slowly only applys during fermentation. The yeast like stabel tempertures. After fermentation, it doesn't matter. I ferment my lagers at 50* for 4 weeks and then raise temp. to 56* for another week to "scrub" out any diacetal and then keg it and put it in a 34* refer....

Re: caramel smell in distillate
I was just reflecting back on the last two distilling runs. Only the hearts had the caramel flavor. I even took most of my hearts from the first run, some late heads and early tails, threw it into the boiler, added water to dilute down to 40% and ran it again. The results were the same, the hearts c...

Re: caramel smell in distillate
I had a run a couple months ago that had a hint of caramel that was absolutely wonderful. The following run was just so so. Last week I ran another wash with a SG of .99 ( all sugar converted) and again i got this caramel flavored vodka. I love it. I just don't know where it comes from.

Which side it is on, would depend on where you are standing. If you are on one side and a friend on the other, it would be on your right and his left, or vise versa.

Re: Making beer with wine yeast?
A beer brewing friend of mine wanted to make a beer with a higher ABV. I suggested useing a wine yeast, but when he went to the local brew shop, they advised against it, as the wine yeast would really change the flavor of the beer.

This is all very enlightening. I always took the attitude that the law wouldn't bother with me for the small amount I make, but all it would take is for the law to get the wrong address and end up at my house while I'm stillin.

Welcome 73sho. Your product from the stripper run should come out cool and you will also be adding tap water to dilute down to 40% before a spirit run.

CA, it looks a lot better cleaned up. If it were mine, and I like shinny stuff, I'd replace that old steel nipple. Polish up a nice brass or copper nipple and put that on her. But that's just me. Good luck with it.

I thought I had come up with a brilliant idea. I took 90+% neutral and added frozen rasberry concentrate and distilled water and diluted down to 40%. This ended up tasting like cough syrup, it was terrible. It seemed like such a good idea.
So don't waste your time with this idea.

Re: Home made carbon filter
Your filter is too short. Recommended length is 5 or 6 feet. I remember reading several months ago, some guy said he carbon filtered and then redistilled and it came out great. Just throwing this out there, as I agree with Rad. Run your still properly and you won't need carbon filtering. But since y...

Re: First Go At It & Wondering if this is how it should be..
When you areated the wash, did you use pure oxygen or even a filter to make sure you are not adding wild yeast? It's possible a wild yeast got a foothold before you added your yeast the next morning. I generally try to cool my wash down quickly with a chiller and pitch my yeast so that it (my yeast)...

Just a quick tip, allow more time than what you calculate to do your run. I always plan on getting an early start, but it never seems to happen and then the run takes a little longer also.

I looked at this thread early this morning and didn't understand. Took another look and now I got it. It's a racking "cane" to be used when fermenting on grain. It looks like a good idea and should work well.
