Re: Ted's Fast Fermenting Vodka

I’m trying to get an idea of how much citric acid to add this wash. My water is around 7.5. I’ve done some testing on a gallon of water and just a quarter teaspoon takes it down to 3.8. I’m not much of a water chemist so some insight would be helpful. I’m looking at a 45 gallon wash, which will req...

Why kind of mash efficiency do you get with YLAY? as twisted said there are no figures afaik. in my personal experience with just a couple of side by side comparisons fermenting on the grain & YLAY. 1) i sieve the wash, through a BIAB on a pulley, into the boiler. i have noticed the bulk of spe...

Re: Ted's Fast Fermenting Vodka

Going back to water, whilst it's clearly nowhere near as important as when brewing beer or cider, I have found that adding a campden tablet and leaving it overnight really helps before adding the ubiquitous epsom salts and citric acid. Obviously everyone's water might be different, but we have high...

Re: Stilling in a BrewZilla 35l?

i use the BZ 3.1 for mashing and distilling, making beer (ie mashing also) you can set a solid temp for mashing, using the recirculating arm, malt tun etc, with excellent results. the temp sensor is on the bottom of the chamber, so when you're mashing, the element turning off & on are not a prob...

Re: When to put the column in full reflux

maybe you have read that some folk (including me) heat up the wash and put the still in full reflux for a period of time before the spirit run. this (apparently) is to encourage the mix of low wines/dunder/& muck to produce more esters? the only reason i have it in full reflux is to stop any vap...

yellow angel says for 10kg of grain, to use 50-80gms of YA. temp range 28-36°C, with an optimum temp of 32°C. i just put 25-27L of water at a certain temp in a fermenter.(using a strike water calculator) add the milled grain which drops the temp to 32°C. adjust PH as required. add the hydrated YA an...

Re: Wheat and OG Question

i went through the same process with unmalted feed wheat. first attempt i was trying to mash normally in a malt pipe using high temp alpha amalase.(my alpha is best at 90°c too) i experienced the swelling of wheat about 85°C, which is it's liquefaction temp(?), where it almost doubled in size and tr...

Re: Wheat and OG Question

unmalted or malted wheat?
iodine test can be misleading, it only means
1) you converted the starch you extracted (but it doesn't tell you if you extracted some or all of the starch)
2) doesn't tell you if you converted the starch to fermentable sugars (or left them as unfermentable sugars)

Thanks yummy 🙏 My hydro is calibed for 20°c, I had around 27-28 degrees C in my wash and accounted for it in brewfather and it actually rose a little (from 1.072 to 1.074) when I did this, I might need to check my crushed rye (afaik kibbled rye, or as close as I can get to it in my local store) and ...

everything i've got involved with water has got S/S camlocks fitted (deflag, condenser, cooling coil) makes everything interchangeable and easy to connect/disconnect. includes 1 x small female/female 'straight through' camlock to insert ie when i'm not using the deflag. 90° S/S angles eliminate hose...

Sounds like the start of a wonderful union with some oak.
TBF i think the OP is trying to make a light white rum, not a full flavoured dark rum
no oak involved :D

if you have the reflux air still, reflux it.
if not, at least double distill it.
can those old style airstills can have a power controller attached, leaving the top (fan bit) separately powered?
find a way to to fit some copper mesh, (they sell a infusion basket?)
scrunch some copper in that?

i also reckon the total sugars will be on the high side  i wouldn't be adding that much citric until you've mixed everything together and then tested your PH. my tap water is usually PH 8, but the acidic dunder i add, brings the ph down. so i need very little citric. BTW i've just noticed you...

i don't think that the LME has any hops in them. the last time i used one for beer was 3 years ago, and looking at my notes, after dissolving the LME, i still had to bring everything to the boil and then go through the bittering process with a hop schedule. i did test my caramalt whiskey sugarwash. ...

good news from kegland. i agree with grumble and yummy about testing with water. i think the test would be to make sure you can obtain a rolling boil with a power setting, without the elements cycling on/off? the only flaw in the test could be that water does actually boil at 100°c and might make th...

Howie, I'm starting to lean in the direction of making the same mod you did. The external controller they shipped won't do the trick (they sent me one with 120v input, won't work, shipping it back). I'll have a look under the hood at the wiring on the gen 4 against the pic you provided. Any addition...

Looking at the Gen4 PCB it uses a Mechanical relay to turn the heater elements on /off. https://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7771040#p7771040 So it must use time proportional switching .
