Re: First try at malting.

50# went well. Had it out on a tarp while it rained for 3 days. Now it's on the floor with a fan on it in my sons room. (He went camping with grandma and grandpa).

Re: Lets get carried away with fruity goodness

Well I ran my kuza fruit must last night... Only got 3 qts from 15 gallons so I'm thinking I should have added sugar. It has an odd taste too. Probably wont be doing that one again next year. They make a better sorbet than spirit. I haven't gotten the chestnuts yet cause I created got some jobs for ...

Re: Lets get carried away with fruity goodness

Anyone ever do anything with nuts? I got a spot with a bunch of chestnut trees and I'm thinking about doing a mash with malted barley and chestnuts just cause they are there. I normally just roast em up and eat them but there are more than I could eat in a year on one tree and my spot has 5 trees so...

Re: alembic still reflux?

Thanks for the input guys. He compared it to the dimples on the inside of a Dutch ovens lid. Maybe he knows more than I give him credit for. I will be getting the same still from Santa Claus this year. I want to get the 20 gallon one but for some reason it cost more than if you buy 2 10 gallon still...

Re: alembic still reflux?

Thats about what I figured. And yes he swears that it's the same as having a thumper (just like popcorn) and that running it more than once will give you more likker with less flavor. He is a mess. I think he knows plenty about drinking alcohol but not much about producing it. I owe him a lot tho. N...

Re: Lets get carried away with fruity goodness

Just strained my dogwood fruit must into the secondary fermenter. Got about 15+ gallons after the squeeze shesh. Do you think it would be a bad idea to throw in the low wines from my apple stash into there and let it hang out for a while then run it nice and slow? I have close to 4 gallons of low wi...

alembic still reflux?

So my buddy owns a 10 gallom copper still. Its one of the more popular ones that pops up when you search for 10 gallon copper stills. I belive its an alembic still. He swears that it "runs it twice just like having a thump keg" now I know that he is mistaken on that one but he is an older ...

Re: How long before first success?

My first run was pretty great. I did 40# of corn and 5# of honeysuckle that I converted using enzymes. I ran it as slow as I could and it was tasty. Smooth and full of flavor. But... Now I run it hot and dirty. Been collecting up my lowwines to do my spirit runs in the future. I dont see any reason ...

Re: First try at malting.

Had to google triticale. From my limited experience its kinda hard to fuck up. Truth be told just soak the grains and wait. The more you move them around the better but I have yet to see any mold or bacteria. Git a bunch of bugs when I tried to sun dry a batch on a tarp. Went back to the deydrator. ...

Ok. I got my first 50# of malt done. There was some trail and error. Then a bit more trial. And a bit more error. But I have settled on what works for me in my space with the things I have on hand. The only thing I cant figure is how to get the malted grain seperate from the roots and shoots. I dry ...

Re: Lets get carried away with fruity goodness

Just finished up pureeing 30-40# of dogwood fruit and 20# of apples I had in the freezer. Put them in a big fermenter and added 3 gallons if water with 7# of sugar melted in it. Pitched 3 packs of e-1118 ... The must, or mash, or whatever tasted good so I'm hopeful something good will come out of th...

Re: First try at malting.

I like that idea. I was gonna take 3 cheap box fans and gut 2. Then use some steel screen to cover the two that I gut and stack them all on cinder blocks with the good fan on the bottom blowing up. Then thow some heat source under it like a lava lamp bulb or even a hot plate turned on low. Currently...

Re: First try at malting.
