Re: Any idea why this is coming out blue?

Probably the copper. And you should not use plastic with your distilate, if you do so, don't give your booze to anyone, nor should you drink it but definitely don't post it in here. It is not a safe material and doing so you are violating forum rules If is the first time you use this still, you shou...

Re: UJSM fermentation time

How did you prepare your ferment?
Did you dissolved all the sugar before or there were still some sugar crystals in your wash?
Did you put enough yeast? It was a healthy one?
Anyway, just keep checking sg everyday and distill only when stabilizes (3 days in a row showing the same reading)

I've seen grappa makers putting straw in the bottom to prevent scorching, I don't know how it would impact on flavor but seems it works

Also, if anyone has any advice on what size liebig condenser I will need to make for this 50 litre pot still running 3kw induction hot plate 30mm fittings I would be most thankful. As I would like to order parts within the next day! Might upgrade the induction plate to 5lw for hot Stripping runs. T...

Re: Benefit of a 15mm vs 30mm still?

you double your max collection rate (by incresing power) or you halve vapor speed if using the same power, this would make vapor and copper to be in contact for longer periods.

Not sure if this is totally right, I bet someone here can validate it or not

Re: Building a shotgun condenser

I use propane under a 30 gallon boiler. I have a 2” shotgun condenser. I can strip a full boiler in 3 hours, so I think you’re on the right track. Even pretty warm water will still be enough to knock down your vapor… Can you give me a little bit more info? How many tubes? which diameter? how long i...

Re: Building a shotgun condenser

The problem isn't the amount of water I have available, but the amount I can use... As the worm condenser is basically an open bucket with the coil inside if I raise water flow it just overflow the bucket, the outlet should be bigger for faster water flow to avoid this issue. But solving this wouldn...

Building a shotgun condenser

Hi folks I have a 30gal boiler pot still with 6" riser that throttles to a 5/8" worm condenser. It suits me ok for single runs but when I've tried to strip I've figured that it is just making me waste butane. It can produce around 6L/h but the vapor get so fast that my distilate is coming ...

Re: Is too much water, too much

you can do parti gyle
-Brew your whisky beer, transfer to fermenter
-add around the same amount of clear water on the grain and mash it again
depending on og reading you decide if you put on fermenter (diluting it a bit) or if you boil add hops and make a beer

Re: Why is corn and rye alcohol NOT made by malting (rather than gelatinizing) the grain"

Malted corn can convert itself, but the yield generally is low because lacks in some enzymes, barley is genetically selected to be malted, corn isn't. To improve the yield you can mash your malted corn, transfer liquid to other vessel then boil (with enough water) the remaining solids to gelatinize ...

Re: Toast damp / new wood

Just a thought about the process.. The moisture in a damp or recent cut wood allow sugars to be in solution rather in solid form. This way some sugars can caramelize and react with aminoacids, Maillard Reaction. Also, the presence of water will result in longer time to reach burning temps, resulting...

you can rack or pump it to the boiler, that's how most people do it, you can even transfer it with a jug.
5gal buckets are cheap and you can have more ferments going simultaneously

Re: Ferment/distil in boiler

dumb idea yeast taste is not good when distilled IMO and you can try yourself, the boiler size has no play in this, just throw everything inside after fermentation So you think even with double distillation I'll suffer offset flavors from yeast? honestly i don't know because I've never tried. Yummy, this is basically the functioning of a distillation process. Lighter molecules can rise faster with less energy and to gain height it needs to give energy away. Bigger (or highly bonded such as water) molecules needs more energy to overpower gravity and to break intermolecular bonds/interacti...

Re: Spirit run

Have a nice distilling day! For your next runs you can strip a bigger volume Instead of having a 40% low wines and put water to decrease abv, strip to around 30%~25% low wines. You'll get a bit extra alcohol, and lots of flavor. Water retains flavor in it, so you should add plain water just if disti...
