Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

Yes that's most likely the reason. There are other ways to run a t500 ...other than following the manufacturers instructions. Play with water flow and watch the results, a T500 is a CM reflux still " cooling management". You don't need to be staring at the thermometers on it to make good ...

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

There isn't a still on earth that wont produce tails. I'm guessing that you own a T500 and you've read the manufacturers operation handbook which states that a T500 wont produce tails. That is a myth and something they will say to make distilling seem simpler than it is , which in turn helps sales....

If you don't know the answer to that question I'm not surprised you booze tastes horrible. You need to do some serious reading .....you could start with this https://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11640. Making good cuts is one of the most important skills you can develop if you w...

I've read that there are no tails (or hearts) with a reflux still. Is that not true?

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

I am no expert but the first question I have is what type of still are you running? Reflux still. T500. Also, have you let your spirits sit for a day or two, they can change pretty dramatically overnight. I haven't, but I'll certainly try that. I would throw it back in to with your next low wines f...

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

So I finished my 2nd WSW, haven't diluted yet. I used a reflux still. The last jar smells different. It doesn't smell like the heads, but it smells different from the rest.

What do you think? Should I dilute it separate from the rest and taste it?

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

I have 2 questions, and I'll do 2 posts. My first WSW was my first non-turbo wash. Comparison is natural. Sorry to report, the results of the WSW don't taste as good as the Turbo wash. I've done 2 turbo washes, the first had carbon in the sugar, and I added the liquid carbon to the 2nd TWash. I used...

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

I didn't expect a hyper-active airlock almost immediately - thanks Wineo! I didn't expect the pleasant bread smell either. I finally found all of the ingredients. I used 1tsp of this Wine Nutrient, which contains DAP and epsom salts and some other stuff (ingredients below): https://www.brewerscoop.c...

Thanks for that. DAP is the first ingredient, and epsom salts the second. I don't know what calcium carbonate is or does, but the vitamins can't be bad, beyond being probably unneeded.

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

Shady's Sugar Shine recipe calls for 3 tbs of DAP - do you use 3tbs of the wine nutrient, Yeast nutrient and yeast energizer are not the same product.. What you have listed is not nutrient but yeast energizer.. yeast nutrient is plain DAP.. Mars It's labeled Wine Nutrient. It's the closest I can fi...

Makes sense. My Turbo washes take 2 weeks, I guess I don't really wanna know how long it will take with bakers yeast. I guess it's champagne yeast until the weather warms up.

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Started this wash today, 2.5 hours in it's bubbling nicely. Not ferociously, just a nice steady purr. I used a champagne yeast instead of baker's yeast, because I can't easily keep my temperature above 30 this time of year. I might try baker's yeast next time though. I see that some say 20-30C, and ...

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

Is Birdwatcher's TPW wash more forgiving? I could try that one now, and better prepare myself for this one for next time. No. I have to use shells to buffer the pH or it drops too low. The amount of shell used up varies, but the pH has never gotten out of control. I'll have to study up on this. Usi...

Seems people managed quite happliy without once apon a time. I did notice th...

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

Here is the one I use- pretty much indispensable if you are serious about it- saves a lot of questions about stuck fermentations and keeping the yeast happy/tasty with all grains etc. For $13 it is a pretty easy investment. Some people have had success with slabs of marble? to achieve same buffer. ...

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash

I've made this recipe a bunch of times and it was my favorite Vodka until I started just putting sugar and water over my spent Bourbon grains. Eliminated the subtle off taste and took on a hint of grains. More "Grey goose" like to my taste. Wineos is a great one though, the trickiest part...

Ya, seems worth a try. If the other ingredients add some flavor I guess I'll find out.

What about the change of yeast? If I look at it one way, it doesn't seem that big a deal. I sure would love to make this one exactly to the recipe though.

Re: Kia Ora from New Zealand

I haven't actually found gypsum or epsom salts yet, but I'm assuming those will be easy to find. It's the DAP that's a problem, at least for now. I have actually found it online from one place, but they have nothing else I want, and I really don't want to pay $18 for them to courier me $6 of DAP. It...

I've run one batch through my Turbo 500. I'm happy with the results and of course I want to do more. My next wash will not use Turbo yeast, carbon or clear, so studying the tried and true recipes is where I'm at now.
