Re: Aerating during fermintation

The only times I touch a ferment are fruit (to sink the hat that shape) or in case of problems otherwise I advise against mixing. Among other things, from what I know, it is the anaerobic phase that forms most of the alcohol

Re: Grape Brandy - Cabernet & Blackbery

I have no experience with wine kits but only with real grapes, every year I distil some wine and also some marc. I always prefer to make clean cuts with very little tail so what doesn't convince me won't be part of the mix. I have tried both oak and chestnut for aging and they all give excellent res...

Re: My mother is trying to kill us all

I produce my white wine vinegar (and sometimes apples vinegar), the best way is to have a bit of vinegar as a starter (chemically untreated vinegar) or insert something that has a bit of acetic bacteria (sometimes it works with Natural cereals, pasta etc.). I had to upload a video to YouTube on how ...

I don't know if you could help but buy something from Aliexpress when savings is a priority (provided you wait long times). I found a couple of links for 2 "https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_9hnehh Here you will find various sizes https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_a52iy7 For PTFE gaskets go here (yo...

Re: When can you safely take the lid off a pot still after a run?

Immediately after finishing the distillation I start disassembling and cleaning, don't worry, the important thing is to pay attention to your hands (heat). If you have glass parts (eg glasses in a flute), remove it but leave the time that cools a little before wetting with fresh water.

Re: Question about personal experience on average run time

I regular use of the plates for small lots, there is no problem with the plates but you can't use the original thermostat, this because you will get on / off cycles and is not good for distillation, but if you insert a SCR (or a similar system ) you will enjoy your plate, as long as you are small lo...

Meanwhile, you could ri-distiller your product and in the meantime you will have the chance to think about what you were wrong in the procedure (you know it was the hurry!)

Re: Corn Sugar vs cracked Corn vs Flaked Corn

I think corn flakes and cracked corn are the same (in terms of flavor). Corn sugar will be flavorless. Corn malt is my first choice.

Re: PID tuning tool/website

It has been repeatedly said here that a PID is not the ideal tool for distillation. I use it to make my beer (Electric Mash) but for SCR distillation or similar are my choice.

Re: Help, I made a monster (too big?)

Generally a high OG is not recommended (although your yeast may cope) especially when coupled with heat stress.Sulfur odors are an indicator of stress but this can vary from yeast to yeast ... for example some lager yeasts typically produce that. annoying odor, generally disappears towards the end o...

Re: Making cuts for vodka

my advice is don't rush ... the best neutral (and the spirits around it) have a lot of benefit from slow high reflux runs, that's my experience. Your yield seems a bit poor so I think you have a lot of alcohol in your heads and tails .. going slower helps in these cases.

Re: First Whisky Run - Battling

I often perform small lots, you have to learn to manage them. First the first thing the beer needs stripping to raise the alcoholic degree otherwise you will not hectare sharp cuts (if I understand correctly you didn't do well the right cuts?), Another suggestion is a rush of the slow spirit. This c...

I don't let detergent anywhere near anything that is in contact with my likker.
I should have specified better that I was speaking for the outside of the barrel and in any case I meant a suitable detergent such as sodium carbonate or caustic soda.

Re: Jacketed Boiler oil question...

I have a steam jacket but I don't think the oil has to be emptied every time. Maybe just occasionally to take a look at Maintenance. I think you already know that the bain Marie works well for products with a high alcohol content.

If you want to look better you can smooth but it is not necessary to go deep ... alternatively you could evaluate a suitable detergent.
