Re: Thick tape for gasket (link)
The link worked, but it insisted i learn Italiano for the remainder of the session. I had to quit the browser, force AliExpress to the main page (non-italian). I actually had an AliExpress page open, and it converted that to Italian when i refreshed the page! Nessun problema, Ciao. (I only speak a l...

Re: Jokes
A tourist couple wander into a beach bar whilst on holiday, and settle down with drinks in the corner. Seated next to them is an old man, and they strike up a conversation. Turns out he's a little down on his luck, so the couple end up buying him a drink. Eventually they get round to asking him a bi...

Re: racing pigeons need the best quality corn...
Hi Zapata, (in my experience) maize intended for popcorn will malt (of sorts). I just don't find it ideal, compared to the 'Pigeon Feed' mentioned. From my experience, 20% Humidity on the grain is ideal. Not wet for too long, never dry, and just damp. Because 'popcorn' is much drier/harder, you have...

Re: racing pigeons need the best quality corn...
Hi Zapata, popcorn is not good (IMO) if you want to malt. It is generally a bigger commercial operation, and kiln dried. Grain for malting needs to be softer / less dried than that used for popcorn. Maize/corn used for popping needs to be drier than racing pigeon feed. So pigeon feed doesn't pop wel...

Re: racing pigeons need the best quality corn...
er, no. The basic corn does not have any additives... i agree that the 'mixes/blends' is more like a soup mix. However, go to the 'Maize' Link and all becomes clear. https://www.vanrobaeysbelgium.com/en-GB/products/mixtures#4-varieties-of-maize I only posted this because after kilos after kilos of l...

'Straw Dog', 1 run or 2, choice is yours.
On a batch a while ago (an intended 'stripping' run) one of the jars (Jar#2 @ 1L) was just too good to mix in. Purely for sport, I had already decided to run the stripping run very slow... This was useful and brings into play the question of whether 1 run or 2... Jar 2 was a definite straw colour, a...

Re: Is White Dog always 'white' or straw...?
Not talking about cloudy, which as you suggest, almost always happens around and below 40% ABV. The straw colour i mention is at 65% ABV, and above, and is transparent. It is not an artefact, or a fault, but is part of the 'method'. Fermenting on grain, straining prior to still run. (No mash clarifi...

Is White Dog always 'white' or straw...?
The 'usual' colour of distillate intended for barrel aging is the query. Q1) Does the barrel quickly mask any colour in the distillate? If you pot still you will see straw coloured distillate regularly. (even on a non-puke slow run) Sometimes with the best (IMO) flavour profile. Q2) Is it customary ...

Re: Parrot for Pot Still
I always use a parrot. Never thought of 'bling', or bothered about what anyone else thinks. I use it primarily to correlate ABV to head temp to what the distillate smells and tastes like. At a certain temp, and ABV, there can be a sweet spot. Match flavour profile to mash bill to temp to ABV and you...

Less hope; more control (for the Turbo 500) : QVR-TB-RFI)
I find a power controller essential. Its like trying to get on a moving horse otherwise. I have been using this model successfully : United Autiomation : QVR-TB-RFI You have to wire it up, but lets assume that is within our ken. Even for a strip run, you then have options; full temp or slow & ab...

Re: Taste the old backset
I was curious about backset today also. ...had a very high corn mash (1º/strip/spirit run) backset left over. let it cool overnight (covered), bottled it, & left it to use next day. Surprisingly, It had already started 'fermenting' by the next morning. Basically, the still run/boiling knocked of...

Re: Why store in a dark cool location?
as we are coming to understand, in general UV is 'damaging' to most things. It will give you a nice tan or burn you. It will also allow any photosynthetic bacteria/microbes to earn a living. It will provide energy to damage chemical bonds, and effectively bleach some liquids in direct sunlight. UV i...

Re: Malting Maize-A home method i use without fail.
(Demy) agreed. Zach, IMO, the malting of corn is (almost all) for flavour. As regards mashing, I basically use it as an adjunct, and add most to already boiling water. (Which of course stops any (and its a minor) activity already). This gelz the starch, and dissolves the (already present) sugars int...

Malting Maize-A home method i use without fail.
Racing pigeon feed is the best quality corn i have found. It malts well, and is well selected/sorted. To malt it : Take 5Kg of cribbs maize. (Pick out any undesirables if present) Put maize in a large tub, cover with water. Make sure the maize is over-covered with water, leaving at least 30mm of wat...

racing pigeons need the best quality corn...
If you are looking for the best quality corn, of various types, look no further than racing pigeon feed. No joke. The Cribbs maize (dried naturally, in the field, on the plant for 6 months, carefully protected with nets) is untreated in any way. Lots of seed maize has either a pesticide to prevent a...

Re: Fermenting in this?????
Hi, it's gonna be fine for fermenting. But, you will not be able to move it. If you gat any Acetobacter infection (poor sterilisation / flies, etc) you will ruin a bathtub full. The 60L version is right on the limit for moving. And if you get an a-bacter infection, less tearful to toss down the sink...

Hi, just joined because I have found this site useful over time. I am sure I will have questions eventually, but there is enough info already posted to sink a battleship. My interests are primarily in malted-corn based all grain mashing. The sourcing of suitable corn to malt yourself, and a valid / ...
