Re: Botanicals and toxicity
The rhubarb stalk contains much less oxalic acid than the leaf. (I know, you are talking root) The stalk has big flavour and would make a nice botanical for gin. The plant will regrow from root giving an almost endless source of rhubarb by growing new stalks each year. Why consume that part of the p...

Re: Silicone tip for steam wand
I’m going to give these silicone tips a try. I see a big advantage fitting it through a 2” Tri clamp fitting rather than lifting the lid on my thumper pot to install the stainless steel hose. Thanks for the tip Eric. Lol. I gave this a try. It didn’t work for me. I used one tip to replace the...

Re: Angel Yeast Question
As you said, you may be over thinking this. Some guys like to break out the abacus and do all the calculations. In the end you get what you get. YLY makes it pretty simple to do a mash. I only use YLY and never do calculation. My batches are 2 pounds per gallon of total volume. That is different tha...

Re: Scotch in plastic
In Alberta there has been some concern about cheap vodka produced and sold in plastic 4L jugs by a micro distillery. I suspect they may be another “distillery” buying ethanol from the Husky ethanol fuel plant diluting it down and selling it. Would love to be proved wrong. Micro distillers are split ...

I am a fan of beer keg boilers. They accept 2" tri clamps. You can install 2" tirclamps in the sides of kegs to accept a hot water heater elements. 2" copper columns and risers are easy to fabricate using 2" tri claps. Silver solder is readily available and can be used to build e...

I think Eric's silicone tips might have saved you. Doesn't seem like it would allow grain to get into the steam leg and cause a plug. I am going to try his idea next steam distill.

These rocket stoves I see all over the inter weeb might make an interesting fire box if the rocket stove passed up through the boiler. they are pretty efficient stoves and can be set up to self feed fuel.

This is a pic of my steam rig. You can see two zip ties on the manometer. The lower one is atmosphere position prior to stream. The second one is positioned when the thump starts thumping, or receiving steam. (This is a dry set up for the picture. No water or mash in any thing) zip ties are a nice e...

Anyone have a recommendation on a good fermenter around 50-100 gal size? Here is a picture of my steam rig. 1/2 keg and a 20 gallon thumper. Thumper is usually 1/3 to 1/2 full, To minimize heat up time and water loss make sure your steam arm runs up from the boiler to the thumper. I fill the boiler and plug it in. Then I assemble the res of the still. I believe currentl...

Some guys want to strip as fast as they can. I’m not convinced. Not convinced of what, exactly? Do you feel that you get a better quality product by striping a little slower? I’m in the same boat. My leibig can handle maybe 5.5kW at its limit, but I have a 6.5kW element. I’ve tried doubling two con...

Re: Product condenser length?
Product condenser requirements are dependant on power input and if I am stripping or doing a spirit run. If the condenser can knock down the vapour to liquid I don’t need more condenser. During a pot strip run I use more power input and my Liebig condenser can’t handle full power. Some guys want to ...

I don't see much of value here. I do! I get exactly what he is doing. Great idea. Heat the end 3/8 of the tubing till dull red, let it cool and that modified wrench can be used to turn a flange for making a tri clamp connection. It would work without annealing the copper but annealing it will make ...

Re: One run and done!
Strip / spirit double runs make a huge difference and drastically improve product. If I have some left over cleared beer that didn’t fit in a strip run it will get added to a spirit run. Only about 10-15 % of a spirit run. My spirit runs are probably slower than most guys do them and I believe this ...

Re: Steam rig planning
Then my next question is, does it matter? Is there any benefit (other than it feels like it should be better) to getting the mash moving, or does it still strip cleanly? I don’t believe a swirl matters as far as getting all of the ethanol out. If that’s what you mean by “strip cleanly” May make hea...

I have added oats. You will taste oats in your rum. The oats will likely improve the mouth feel but so does time on oak.
