Re: Steam build

Silver soldered a pull through 2” ferrule in the side of the 20 gallon pot. Tri clamp adapter for the 4500 Watt element. Test ran the controller. All checks out. Today was cleaning run. Vinegar run found a couple small solder leaks. Repair and clean the copper and did Vinegar run again! Ran some hea...

Re: Flaked corn!

Ive been asked more than once " how much is a pinch of Epsom Salts." A pinch here is listed as 1/8 of a tsp.....or half a dash. 2 x smidgens also equal a pinch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approximate_measures My wife says add “some” when asked how much. :wtf: Reminds me of a two finger pour. Re: Flaked corn!

Cracked corn vs flaked corn. There is a huge price difference. It will be interesting to see if the efficiency difference of flaked corn comes close to overcoming the extra cost compared processing cracked corn. Probably not. Winter here is what made me move to flaked corn. Easy to process inside in...

Re: Flaked corn!

Another ferment on the go. Same 16 pounds corn and 6 pounds Pilsner malted barley in 55 liters. Used MileHigh enzymes as well. I sanitized the hell out of everything to try and reduce the lacto. Will save some backseat for next batch. Most people don't worry too much about the lacto, and I can thin...

Re: Steam build

Silver soldered a pull through 2” ferrule to the lid of the mash pot. Some pics of some of the ways the still column can be reconfigured. It can go on a keg and can also attach just the head without the short extension. One goal is to be able to steam on grain. Thank for looking in. IMG_3397-3.jpeg ...

The only gauge I have is an antique and is in mm of mercury.
Use some clear plastic hose and make a water manometer.
There is some polycarbonate tubing set aside for that. Will intersect the steam cross arm with a T. Couple things getting worked out all at once.

Some progress. IMG_3395-3.jpeg Just curious what the tall column and sight glass are for? Lol. The column has every piece installed in that photo. Re: Flaked corn!

The last batch seems a little sour to me. Might have some lacto going on early in the ferment. It is all racked off and stored at 8 Celsius waiting to get stripped next weekend. 40 L of nice clear yellow corn wash. Another ferment on the go. Same 16 pounds corn and 6 pounds Pilsner malted barley in ...

220 Volt 30A controller. I added a 30A switch to the left side of the box since The photo was taken. Cycled a 4800 Watt shop heater repeatedly up and down to test controller. Seems good. All the smoke stayed in. A small USB fan for cooling. Didn’t seem to build any heat... but it is -29 Celsius. :cr...

For those who do fabrication this might be handy when joining SS with your welder. I use it on bikes and rods for frame and cages. Has helped.

If I can’t get enough pressure hold with weights I will rig that up! Good idea. Reminds me of a relationship I had back in the 90's. I miss that woman. Doesn't seem like an infection because it happened so fast. It sat at over 190 degrees for hours. I just spit all my whisky out on the floor🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I know there is punctuation and all but OMG, 😳🤣🤣🤣 I dated one of those girls!

Re: New guy, first run

I’m new as well. Welcome! What are you using to control the element? Never mind the temperature, adjust your element based upon output flow as long as your element is covered by wash! 8 gallon still so you need enough wash to cover the element for the entire run, but not so much it pukes up the colu...

Re: Using salt during strip runs

The “study” is a pretty small sample. It draws some conclusions that I’m not sure about based upon the data it presents. One huge factor missing is the lack of subjective taste and aroma comparison. If production of ethanol was the only priority, say for fuel, might be worth a look at. From the dat...

Shouldn’t be any stray voltage with that set up unless your insulation is broken. You will know pretty quick if you have an electrical issue!

To much heater might be an issue....

Re: Black gunk in my copper pipes and thumper - is this right?

Sweet feed made black oil / grease residue in my distillate, column and condenser. Looked just like that. The flecks were greasy between fingers when rubbed. Came over throughout the run after first 600 ml of heads came out. I used coffee filers to remove it but the product has a serious off taste. ...

Cold crashing in the cold room! It’s to cold to even think about distilling! We will be minus 30 Celsius again tonight. Re: Flaked corn!

Your enzymes will(and obviously did) give a false starch reading if the sample isn't clear. You likely had solids in you sample. Yes? Thanks for the tip. No solids but the sample was plenty cloudy. I use a very fine metal coffee maker screen to get clean solid free samples from ferments that I pull...

Re: Flaked corn!

:D Pretty happy with how the ferment went. Al the action stopped so I pulled out the BRIAB. Hardly any corn and barley left! The enzymes and malted barley appear to have really ripped apart the starch. The big test was would it strain through the bag? YES! :o Just squeezing by hand got it as dry as ...
