Re: First Spirit Run: UJSSM!
Also - based on my yield this time I’ll get enough 250ml bottles for the full run to help train my pallet a bit more to find hearts rather than go off of temp/and approximations.

Re: First Spirit Run: UJSSM!
You think more than a gallon from a 5 gal strip? My wash is around 9% and I collect down to 20% As for the take, I think I started collecting hearts a little early at 183F or 83% abv. I had read that a light whisky cut is around 70% but it was still tasting pretty good so I let the hearts run down t...

First Spirit Run: UJSSM!
Finally got through my first sprint run! Working on a grainfather with a copper alembic pot still attachment. 4 generations UJSSM 5 gallon washes at a time 4 Stripping runs, ran them all down to 20% 4 gallons of low wines added about a 1/4 gal water to get it closer to 40% in the pot. FIRST Spirit R...

Re: Quick n easy gin advice
Nah - not easier. Odins is a meceration and I was looking for a Bit of two fold here. 1. Adapting odins to a vape recipe and sorting out the volumes as I’ve read maceration and vapor differ significantly. I’m sure this is covered somewhere in his threads I just haven’t found anything near as definit...

Re: Dunder vs Wash in spirit run
Thanks - I was sticking to the tried and true recipes and read through the entire threads of Pugirum, Buccaneers bob’s, and hook and trying to organize them. Obviously I was mistaken on hooks detail on fresh dunder vs live dunder, but I have yet to find a thread on live dunder vs. fermented wash in ...

Re: Quick n easy gin advice
You following me around the forums NZChris? I’m on gen 6 of UJSSM and just exploring where to head next. If I can get a rum fermenting (thanks for the reply), some neutral in the pot for an ‘easy’ gin, and a brew going all in the same week I’m stoked. Help appreciated, snark totally deserved. Cheers.

Re: Dunder vs Wash in spirit run
No doubt - not looking to get a 10 year spirit off of the spout. But I’m also willing to put the time into aging. - looking for some advice on a full bodied, but short gen rum that will age well. - a live dunder pit isn’t gonna do well on the n-th storey of a high rise in a polluted city. So - eithe...

Quick n easy gin advice
Looking for a quick n easy vapor distilled gin recipe. Really looking for botanical measure advice for this. Goal: light, floral, a hit of earl grey Equipment: running a T500 with an alembic copper pot with botanical basket. Process: I only have a pot still no neutral on reserve, and the goal here i...

Re: Dunder vs Wash in spirit run
Ah, I misread the Hook recipe as dunder (backset) going into the spirit run, but now I see that is says specifically dunder pit. I lieu of a dunder pit in a small condo with a mostly tolerant wife, I also saw putting fermented wash into the spirit run. To me this seems like it would cause some major...

Dunder vs Wash in spirit run
I’ve seen variously that adding a % of dunder and/or wash into the spirit run goes a long way in adding depth and the ‘rum’ profiles to a distillate. Curios to know what proportion of one/both you use. Goal: solid over proof aged navy rum sipper. Equipment: t500 boiler with a copper alembic pot stil...

Re: Alembic Pot Still Lyne arm/dome seal.
Attached a photo. As I said. Smells like water, tastes like water. Yields haven’t been off. The only place I smell any vapor from would be around the temp probe, which I would expect since it’s not a perfect seal on this unit.

Alembic Pot Still Lyne arm/dome seal.
Coming here in an over abundance of caution. I’m running the alembic pot still with copper dome on a t500 boiler. In this Unit the lyne arm screws to the dome and there is a rubber gasket between the nut and the arm that secures the two. I notices while running the still today a extremely small amou...

Re: Metal Substance floating in still
I’m in it for the hobby, not to save a few bucks, shit happens. Not sure how I forgot the sacrificial run as I have it clearly written down in my notes. Chalk it up to getting over excited for a new hobby. I’ll revisit the peated whisky in a few months. Going to switch over to UJSSM for a bit to get...

Re: Metal Substance floating in still
- I didn’t do a sacrificial run after my vinegar run. Crap. - This was my second stripping run and it didn’t show up in my first. - Was an all grain heavily peated wash. - The residue is def a sparkly shimmery metallic looking substance. Conclusion: I’m gonna chuck all of it and start again. Lesson ...

Metal Substance floating in still
Hi All - I used my Alembic Pot Still for a stripping run for the second time ever. I had completed a vinegar run to clean it prior to the first strip but this time when I rinsed out the still I saw distinct silver metal in the dome of the lid and in the water when I rinsed it. 1. Does this look like...

Re: First gin wash pot still.
Also just reading in an old thread when using the botanicals basket that it’s difficult/impossible to make cuts. The direction was to strip, spirit, then infusion run. Does that sound more accurate?

Re: First gin wash pot still.
Pretty sure I know the difference. I had planned to triple distill. Strip twice and make cuts on the third run. The idea is to ensure as neutral a spirit as possible prior to vapor infusion, which tends to impart a more delicate flavor than maceration from what I’ve read.

Re: First gin wash pot still.
Thanks for the feedback all! Let’s simplify. 1. Any advantage of doing FFV over TPW if I’m striping twice in a pot still! Assumption was FFV would give a better mouthfeel. M 2. Yes, Odin’s is a mace ration gin. Does anyone have a good vapor recipe that they’ve found successful? 3. Does the ratio of ...

Re: First gin wash pot still.
I recall some additional questions after a couple home brews. I plan to vapor infuse roughly 3 gallons on low wines into my spirit run. I’ve seen a lot of ratios of botanicals, but none of them seem to take into consideration a) the amount of distillate in the run b) any adjustment to vapor vs macer...

First gin wash pot still.
Hey all! New to the craft and looking for my next project. I dove head on with my first distillation with a 100% peated whisky that’s now aging away. For my second go I’m looking to simplify a bit and want to go with a gin. My setup is a grainfather with an alembic pot still. Capacity is around 5-7 ...

Re: First Ever Stripping Run (peated whisky)
Thanks all. 1. I don’t cut any fores in the stripping run. Seemed a waste if you’re going to do cuts on the spirit run. 2. I think I’ll go ahead and do one more wash just to be able to collect some of the late feints from the stripping run to make sure I’m maximizing the peat here. I’ll also save so...

Re: First Ever Stripping Run (peated whisky)
It was 20% at the spout. Should I have run it down further to the point where the total of the lows were at 20%? I had read to cut the stripping run off at 208F or 20%abv. It’d be too bad if I wasted a whole bunch of potential from the ethanol remaining in the backseat that went down the drain. I su...

First Ever Stripping Run (peated whisky)
Hey All - posting my first - first distillation experience. Coming from an all grain brewing bg on my grainfather setup with an alembic pot still.
