Re: First Rum Spirit Run!
Continuing on this thread. I ended up with a gal of 60% mostly hearts. Started with spirals (I know, I’ll be switching to dominoes after this) To my 1 gal added used ujssm 1inch alligator char spiral, 1” of medium toast and 1” new medium toast. Two weeks in and this has some intense wood! My hearts ...

Re: First Rum Spirit Run!
NZChris - I was roughly following kiwi’s guide but wanted to fraction everything between first drops and hearts (I figured around 79%) just to hone my nose and palate and also the transition to tails. I hit 80% (kiwis guide) pretty quickly compared to UJSSM at about 1L of heads. My UJSSM heads seeme...

Re: First Rum Spirit Run!
On to the cuts. I know this is where the art kicks in, but thought I’d post anyway. Collected in 200ml bottles. Discarded the first 400ml as I hadn’t taken foreshore off my stripping runs. I’ll only note every other bottle for the sake of brevity. I haven’t blended yet (nervous novice). Jars 14-19 a...

Re: First Rum Spirit Run!
Thanks yummy! I’m def more sensitive to the tails wet socks smell. Cant stand it. Read of some folks digging way down into the sub 60% for some deeper rum flavor but I’m already picking up some tails-y odors around there. Glad to know there’s goodness in some of those late heads that I shouldn’t be ...

First Rum Spirit Run!
Been waiting for this moment since I bought my pot still. Today I ran my first RUM spirit run on a t500 w/ copper alembic attachment following the hook recipe (but also made some dark rum essence for aging experiments). Combined 3 stripping runs w/ 1 gal fresh wash for about 5 gallons @ 40%. Waiting...

Re: ‘Fresh Wash’ into Low Wines question.
Thanks again all - added about a gal of fresh fermented! Wash into my low wines this morning, needed a bit of extra water to get it just about 40%. Still is chugging away now with about a 5gal charge from 3 stripping runs. This is my first rum spirit run after focusing on UJSSM as a beginner. This r...

Re: ‘Fresh Wash’ into Low Wines question.
Thanks Zed. That’s what I had assumed and had set aside some wash already. I’m def going to be experimenting with a few things with this rum but mostly on the aging side of things. Going for something full flavored. Have some buccaneer bobs dark rum essence ready to go. Some new and used toasted Ame...

‘Fresh Wash’ into Low Wines question.
Following the Hook Rum from tried and true and read through many many threads and can’t for the life of me figure out if ‘fresh wash’ is fermented or unfermented when they call for adding it into the spirit run for extra flavor. Help appreciated.

Re: 110v grainfather boiler power for spirit run
The element on the 220 version is 2000 watts. So a bit more power. I’ll just continue to play around with it and focus on the product at the spout and aim for the single drips.

110v grainfather boiler power for spirit run
Hey All - My boiler setup is the 110v grainfather with alembic pot still. This unit has dual 1600 watt and 600-watt elements and the newer control box which allows for direct power control mode and not just temp. My question is around the spirit run using the 110v version. In various videos online I...

Re: First Rum Strip: Sediment in strip
Quick update - after filtering with unbleached coffee filters the stripping run is completely clear. There was a bit of sediment that had settled near the bottom that I expect was from the puke. The ‘fishy’ smell that came across at the end of the strip (I collected some separately) had mostly faded...

Re: First Rum Strip: Sediment in strip
The anti foam is the still spirits distilling conditioner. It’s the only thing I use from them. Yeast was just standard bakers yeast. I used LD Carlson Dap and 1 b vitamin to promote yeast health. I do think this is just the smelly fusil oils and perhaps I’m just perceiving them as fishy smelling. I...

Re: First Rum Strip: Sediment in strip
Gnarly to breathe that in NZChris! I’m going to double down on the anti foaming agent next stripping run to see if I can totally prevent any puking. I’ve also never used any filters at all, but grabbed some unbleached natural filters that might help clean it up a bit without losing flavor. I’ve read...

Re: First Rum Strip: Sediment in strip
Got it. Maybe fishy is the wrong word. I also think I got a near puke and the crud that got stuck to the sides further up the boiler got brought over in the vapor path. You can see that the distillate has a bit of color that carried over. Left is the ruM strip vs UJSSM on the right. And I did notice...

Re: First Rum Strip: Sediment in strip
Thanks NZChris! After some digging I found a decent thread on the mystery brown, silver shimmery sludge that a lot of folks seem to have collecting in their domes after a rum or all grain run. Sigh of relief since I had never seen this in a UJSSM or birdwatchers. Do you also get this almost fishy sm...

Re: First Rum Strip: Sediment in strip
On closer inspection of the dome, when I wipe it I see a coppery dirty color and a silver shimmer. This is similar to what I saw in the distillate and was floating (not sinking) in the backset. I’ve seen this once before in one of my first runs when I had forgot do a sac run on a new still. But I’m ...

First Rum Strip: Sediment in strip
Hey y’all. Stripped my first rum wash today. Everything went smoothly but since it’s my first run, thought I’d come here to make sure all is well. Recipe: pugirum Wash: 5gal Yield: 1.5 gal (down to 18% at the spout) Setup: T500 w/ alembic copper pot still Still has been used multiple times, and is c...

Also - based on my yield this time I’ll get enough 250ml bottles for the full run to help train my pallet a bit more to find hearts rather than go off of temp/and approximations.

Re: First Spirit Run: UJSSM!
You think more than a gallon from a 5 gal strip? My wash is around 9% and I collect down to 20% As for the take, I think I started collecting hearts a little early at 183F or 83% abv. I had read that a light whisky cut is around 70% but it was still tasting pretty good so I let the hearts run down t...

First Spirit Run: UJSSM!
Finally got through my first sprint run! Working on a grainfather with a copper alembic pot still attachment. 4 generations UJSSM 5 gallon washes at a time 4 Stripping runs, ran them all down to 20% 4 gallons of low wines added about a 1/4 gal water to get it closer to 40% in the pot. FIRST Spirit R...

Re: Quick n easy gin advice
Nah - not easier. Odins is a meceration and I was looking for a Bit of two fold here. 1. Adapting odins to a vape recipe and sorting out the volumes as I’ve read maceration and vapor differ significantly. I’m sure this is covered somewhere in his threads I just haven’t found anything near as definit...

Re: Dunder vs Wash in spirit run
Thanks - I was sticking to the tried and true recipes and read through the entire threads of Pugirum, Buccaneers bob’s, and hook and trying to organize them. Re: Quick n easy gin advice
You following me around the forums NZChris? I’m on gen 6 of UJSSM and just exploring where to head next. If I can get a rum fermenting (thanks for the reply), some neutral in the pot for an ‘easy’ gin, and a brew going all in the same week I’m stoked. Help appreciated, snark totally deserved. Cheers.

Re: Dunder vs Wash in spirit run
No doubt - not looking to get a 10 year spirit off of the spout. But I’m also willing to put the time into aging. - looking for some advice on a full bodied, but short gen rum that will age well. - a live dunder pit isn’t gonna do well on the n-th storey of a high rise in a polluted city. So - eithe...

Re: Dunder vs Wash in spirit run
Ah, I misread the Hook recipe as dunder (backset) going into the spirit run, but now I see that is says specifically dunder pit. I lieu of a dunder pit in a small condo with a mostly tolerant wife, I also saw putting fermented wash into the spirit run. To me this seems like it would cause some major...

Dunder vs Wash in spirit run
I’ve seen variously that adding a % of dunder and/or wash into the spirit run goes a long way in adding depth and the ‘rum’ profiles to a distillate. Curios to know what proportion of one/both you use. Goal: solid over proof aged navy rum sipper. Equipment: t500 boiler with a copper alembic pot stil...

Re: Alembic Pot Still Lyne arm/dome seal.
Attached a photo. As I said. Smells like water, tastes like water. Yields haven’t been off. The only place I smell any vapor from would be around the temp probe, which I would expect since it’s not a perfect seal on this unit.
