Re: spirit run ABV - 40% or 25%
i strip right down to about 1%ABV that makes my charge for the spirit run about 25%abv (i also go right down to 1% on the spirit run for the feints) that way i have full flavour and no water needs to be added to get 67%ish for aging after cuts

Re: Malting Success?? % sprouting..
i think im into the 98% range now (using feed grade barley). after removal of the floaties that is and about 95% leaving them in (what i mostly do) be careful using seed corn or barley as it can be treated with antifungal nasties, malting barley just means its graded, feed barley is not treated but ...

Re: videos explaining how to malt your own barley
i use the "hole in my bucket" method to soak adding water twice a day for 2 days, (or untill the chit shows) then that goes into the roller untill the acrospire reaches to top of the grain (about 5 days) i dont add any water or do anything while it is in the barrel apart from inspect it to...

Re: videos explaining how to malt your own barley
that may help if this was used to dry the grain aswell as it would lift and drop the grain with large bits of wood, but you would also need a larger motor as the whiper motor just keeps up and you would also have problems with getting traction on the drum

Re: help with 8kg of peated malt?
the price is $5 a kg That's a good price. in Scotland itself, it's at about £4.15 a kg. Even given that the pound is seriously low against the dollar making it a relatively cheap buy, that's still about $6.50 US without the shipping costs. its not that cheap i can get peat smoked malt for AUS$4.80 ...

Re: How to filter booze ?.
the funnel it so slow because the only area that is really draining the the pipe at the bottom what you need is to go to a kitchen supply joint and get a Chinois and some fat filters to fit (use to clean the oil from a deep fryer, I'm a chef and use one every day) will filter just as good or better ...

Re: my malt dryer
so you malt in the bucket? the advantage with the screen is that it removes all the rootlets and the dust is most likely flammable so i wouldn't want to use a shop vac as the use a brushed motor and some blow throw the motor BOOM!!

what i have learned so far.. (plus how i malt) DO NOT RUN THIS INSIDE!!! after running it for about half an hour in the shed i thought it was on fire as the shed was filled with a smog like hase.. it wasnt smoke it was VERY fine dust and it messed me up a little (i'm still feeling clogged up) atleas...

Re: my malt dryer
the dust is a REAL prob though so i think outside is the only way to go... (also build this at you own risk as its a fire risk) the heavy fly-wire seems to let the rootlets through enough that at the end of the kiln i think they will all be gone from the malt

my malt dryer
i have built myself a prototype malt dryer from an old clothes dryer (no need for a pillow case) i covered the inlet holes and replace the front filter with heavy duty fly-wire.. i had an old drum that matched the dryer i had so i cut the back outta the drum and bolted it to the back of the complete...

well, I soaked my barley for 3 days, changed the water about 4 times. then I put it into my wheelbarrow about 2 inches deep and covered it over with a board. I have been 'rotating' the grain every morning, but I don't think its working. it smells like puke, and the heads of the grain are developpin...
