Re: Heating pad for fermenter
The inkbird controller Jonny mentioned sure is nice. Set it and forget it. I use one with a 100W light bulb under the fermenter (fermenter sitting on a short stand) and wrap it all in reflectix. You can get it as warm as you want.

Re: My rum never tastes like rum
So, my Panela was supposedly delivered...only problem is I received pre-cooked white corn meal instead. So now I have another month to wait for the replacement. Arrrgh! I wonder if "pre-cooked white corn meal" would be good in a bourbon mash? I have 10kg of it, and they're letting me keep...

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
I ran a second run on 5 gallons of panela low wine. Straight off the still I was surprised how similar it is to all molasses. Definitely lighter on flavor, but the flavor seems to be the same. Not that it's a good or bad thing, just an observation from a newbie to the rum world.

Re: How to make an everlasting PTFE gasket, Very Easily...
I have tried two brands with the same results. I'm sure the residue is probably from condensed vapor trying to seep under the gasket rather than the teflon leaching something onto the stainless. It's just so dang hard to get off.

Re: How to make an everlasting PTFE gasket, Very Easily...
Have any of you all noticed a residue left by the PTFE tape on the sealing surfaces? I decided to try one of these gaskets instead of flour paste for sealing my homemade copper cone to the top of a SS keg. It sealed nicely but every time I take it apart to clean up after a run there is an "impr...

Re: My first run!
So my main question is: why was there such lack of correlation between the temp at top of distiller and the ABV of the product? There is a correlation between vapor temp and ABV but it's not useful for making cuts. Lets say you're running your still so the output is a pencil lead size stream. If th...

Re: Mosquito traps
There's a couple of homemade mosquito traps on youtube using 5 gallon buckets, a small fan and a lamp. Kind of a hillbilly clone of some commercial traps. Yeah I might throw one of those together and see how it does. Same principle as the one AlWorms linked. Sounds like you've had good luck with yo...

Mosquito traps
Anybody ever built or bought any kind of mosquito trap that actually works? There are a bunch of ideas on the interwebs - fan in a bucket that sucks them in after they are attracted by a light, dish soap in stagnant water to make them drown, etc. Then there's the store bought CO2/vacuum traps, but t...

Re: What would you do?
It would be a pain in the a$$ trying to use it for mashing and fermenting without cutting a bigger hole. I say cut a bigger hole and then make a bowl adapter to mount your still head on it. You could boil/mash/ferment/distill all with that one keg if want to.

Didn't know if this should go here or in the "songs about moonshine" thread but here you go. One of our local boys. He's damn good. And this kind of country reminds me of Dire Straits, R.E.M. and Nirvana dropped in a same flask. Being only 8 years elder than my own youngster is, this fell...

Re: Best Silver solder, What? Why? Where?
Any lead free silver solder is fine for copper to copper. Water soluble flux such as Oatey H-20 gives you the easy cleanup, and is cheap. I'd save the Stay-Brite solder and liquid flux for joints where stainless is involved. And you absolutely NEED those two when stainless is involved. MAPP gas can ...

Re: How much yeast
You don't have to. You can sprinkle it right on top of the mash and put the lid on her and it'll work fine. If you want to proof it and make sure the yeast is healthy and viable sprinkle it on top of a cup or two of water. After it's all sunk and hydrated add some of your mash or some sugar and it s...

Either should be fine up into the 90s*F. Like you said, I doubt heat is the issue. I'd cross that off th...
