Re: Heads or is it just me?

Fwiw, you don't need to spend 20 mins stacking the column.....start taking off fores at a steady slowish drip a few mins after the plates are loaded. The next 20 mins are better utilised doing that imo. Smell what is coming off, you will see what I mean. Speed up some for heads, but still slow is g...

Heads or is it just me?

Take off speed has a huge amount of impact on plated columns.....its what dictates how much smearing you will get.....to fast will let tails through. To fast at the beginning will spread fores and heads further. Thank you Saltbush! I’ll fiddle with my early takeoff speed and see if I can get better...

Re: Heads or is it just me?

Thank you setsumi, that is some good information. I’ve never heard or read that about plate depth or take off speed.

Re: Heads or is it just me?

Next question (as I approach doing some similar runs on a somewhat smaller volume) is what do you do with them? Chuck them in feints? Blend and age? Blend and drink? Also, out of curiosity foolproof, are you doing a one-and-done or a strip then spirit run? I had good luck with a one-and-done with 2...

Heads or is it just me?

I run a 26 gal ss pot with 3”-3 plate column with dephleg and liebig condenser. On a typical 20 gallon ujssm run I full reflux for 20-30 minutes to stack the column then collect fore shots at a drip. I toss the first 500 ml, then collect in pint jars at a just under a pencil lead size stream. I let t...

Pot still or column still in pot mode, which is faster?

Are you mocking me or my question?

Pot still or column still in pot mode, which is faster?

Hey guys, which is faster for striping and/or spirit runs? A traditional 20 gallon copper pot still with a 7 ft coil of 3/8in worm or a 20 gallon column still in pot mode with a Liebig condenser? Both with a 5500 watt element.

Howdy fellas

New enthusiast here. I wish I would have HD earlier, as I’ve got a whole check list of “do not do’s” that I have already done! I’m sure I’m not the first so now I need to track down all the threads to right my wrongs.
