Re: Corny Keg Safe for Fermenting?
Wow that's a beast! I just looked on the link and yes it's got all corny fittings so essentially it's a corny keg, you lucky man. Great score! That will do really nicely as an 8gal ish ferment vessel. If you search the forum for "Corny keg low wines storage" you'll find a thread that will...

Re: Corny Keg Safe for Fermenting?
A 10gal corny keg! Can we please see a picture of this thing, I have never seen one bigger than 5gal and I've got quite a few! Got a couple of 3gal and even a modded one that takes 6lts, but never heard of bigger. If you wrap that main rubber seal in PTFE, take out the posts and replace wit...

Corny Keg Safe for Fermenting?
I came into the good fortune of 2 5-gal Corny kegs & a 10-gal Corny keg. I don't feel confident storing anything in them after distillation, because of their gaskets and lines. But is there any risk in fermenting in them? Just based off alcohol percentages, I am assuming there wouldn't be. But c...

Re: Electric Control Box Help?
On the 240v make the kill switch a double pole switch that will isolate both hots. Thats what I drew in my suggested rewire plan. The first thing on the left is the switch . Yummy, I saw the switch but the black runs through a common. Does it isolate the black? Double pole switches that I know has ...

Re: Electric Control Box Help?
In the US a 3 wire dryer circuit has two hots and a ground no neutral. I live in an older house, built before recent changes to the 3-prong grounding standards in the US. I removed the back panel to see how the dryer is wired (which is plugged into the outlet I'll be using): https://i.stack.imgur.c...

Re: Electric Control Box Help?
He pointed me to a post by xxxxxx xxxxxxx that suggested something similar, and that's what we ended up going off on. Him and xxxxxxxxx both said that the higher element wouldn't be a concern for dry firing, since is just used for bringing the full charge to temp, then turned off. What we have here...

Re: Electric Control Box Help?
I am assuming you are in the USA . From what I learned online, the 3-prong dryer is sending 2 hots and a neutral. Yes , and for 240V you only need the Hots .Leave the neutral out of it .It is only needed when using 120V. I used red for the hots, black for the neutral. You should use standard colour...

Re: Electric Control Box Help?
Realestwhiteboy, What I wonder is why you put the element in the middle of the keg? That significantly increases the MINIMUM liquid level you need to avoid dry firing. When I built my keg boiler I mounted the elements (yes, I have 2 in my boiler) as close to the bottom dish as I could, just above t...

Electric Control Box Help?
Me and my bud have given in to the reality that it's time to build our first SCR controller for our keg build. We have all of the parts ... I think. We have 2 elements in the keg, so we designed it out to basically be 2 controllers in 1 enclosure (1 to control the 240v outlet, 1 to control the 120v ...

Re: Does 2 Elements Require 2 outlets?
I suggest adding a real safety power off switch in addition to your SSR switch. The SSR may fail and provide full power, not reacting anymore to your little switch. You will use that safety power off only in case of a malfunction. So a 30 Amp circuitbreaker (like in your breaker box) should be chea...

Re: multiple foreshots
I always toss foreshots, regardless how many times I've ran it. I could be totally wrong, but I'm a better safe than sorry guy. Here is my thinking: The chemicals that make foreshots deadly aren't gone after foreshots are tossed, they are throughout the run in smaller overall percentages of the liqu...

Re: Does 2 Elements Require 2 outlets?
I have two 4.5kW (240VAC rated) elements in my keg boiler. I have them EACH powered with a triac control circuit powered by 120VAC. They each are run from separate 20 amp breakered household circuits . Each element draws nearly 9.8 amps at 1175 watts when fully on (slight power loss to the control ...

Does 2 Elements Require 2 outlets?
Me and my distilling partner are finishing up our first keg build, and wiring up our control box is going to be the final step. Based off the recommendation of someone else, we went with 2 elements in the pot (one near the bottom, only closer to the middle). Our local Lowes only had 1 element in sta...

Re: Electric heat source, propane furnace in house?
It would have to be one hell of a leak to have a that much of a concentration to ignite at that distance. Also there is not many gas boilers left with a standing pilot, most are hot plate ignited for efficiency. Many domestic hot water heaters are still using a standing pilot. But at that distance....

Electric heat source, propane furnace in house?
I have a simple 8gal pot still (charged with 4-5 gallons) & use an electric heat source on, but recently moved to a new house that has a propane furnace for the house. I've never had propane or natural gas heat in a home, much less distilled near a propane furnace. How weary should I be? How ris...

Re: My first solder ... with petroleum-based, oops.
How water (or distillate) isn’t hot enough to melt the residual flux if it’s still in there. That’s actually why you don’t use petroleum based flux. But it won’t hurt you in that concentration. It’s just a good practice to use the appropriate components and never take short cuts. Clamp the pipe so ...

That very much could be new old stock. Or truck stock. Never used. You know what, you could be correct. I haven't cut the plastic open, just in case everyone came in here advising to send it back and not use ... but the inside of the copper does look clean & shiny from what I can see, it just l...

Used copper of unknown origin?
I know origin of fermenters matters, but does the origin of the copper matter? Or is a vinegar soak, vinegar run, and sac run going to clean it no matter it's previous use? Edit: It's a 2-foot piece of 2" copper that is planned to use as the column on a keg, all straight and no bends (if that a...

you can run those 5.5kw elements on 120. That's what I'll likely be doing. Quick question. Since it sounds like you're going to have a similar heating setup, I figured you might have an idea on this. Thanks all for all the advice. We are starting to finalize our plans on this and move towards the build next week. :) 3/4 over 1/2 is actually recommended but 36-48 length is also recommended. We decided to make our own. Picked up 5' cuts of 1/2" and 3/4" today, getting the last couple fit...

5 us gallons ? so 17-18l? so your looking at about a 10l or 2 real gallons ;) or a 3 us gallon load? ( you do not want the still to puke.. ) I'm going to build on the 15.5gal keg. I dunno what to do with the 2 5-gallon kegs yet, they just came as part of the package. Thought about storage or ...

My first keg build ... good, bad, suggestions?
I got an old keg that had been left in a barn/outside for who knows how long. I say possibly outside because it came with a tank and 2 5-gallon kegs that had leaves and twigs inside. But at $100 for everything, I couldn't pass it up. Some BKF and a couple hours had them all looking good again,...

Re: Copper or puke?
All good  . Yeah it probably was a bit of residue from the clean foam up you had . In most cases , you will double pot still so a little bit of puke or puke residue in the stripping run is not going to matter . I ‘d recommend you rinse out the condenser with water after a puke so that when...

Copper or puke?
I did a full cleaning last night with a vinegar run and sugar shine run. Vinegar came out a sky blue color, cleared up. Sugar came out crystal clear with some floaters. But I pushed the sugar through fast to get it over with, so I believed it I just pushed too far and got a small puke. Me and my bud...

Re: Cloudiness in middle of run only
Again, running with a thumper will make your system run “reactively”….vapor production lags the heat input changes. So, what you’re experiencing at the spout happened a while before you saw the cloudiness form in your product. Chances are, you’re pushing the boiler too hard to start the run and the...

Re: Cloudiness in middle of run only
We are running Popcorns recipe (sugar and cornmeal). We are running a single run with a thumper.
Usually get about a gallon from 4-5 gallons to start (128oz) before we cut under 20 proof. The cloudiness usually starts between 80-90 proof and clears up when we fall under 70.
