Re: Cloudy Gin question
I did do 100ml cuts, but in the end threw it all together (I did stop around 52% ABV as the taste started to disappear). As to a fores cut, for a 1 litre run, what do you think, 50ml? Or is that too much? I take 10ml, smell it, sometimes including it. From experience I have found a cutoff volume th...

Re: Cloudy Gin question
Some nice looking combos there. How do you find the apple comes through? This reminds me I wanted to play around with cranberries. Have some in the freezer I can try. Hi TwoSheds, I haven't tried them yet. I distilled them last Saturday, so I will try them tomorrow (so almost 7 days to settle). I w...

Re: Cloudy Gin question
Did you do an Odin's Easy Gin? If so you ran way too far at 52% What was you combined final abv? Just finished one with an average abv of 72% Hi EricTheRed, No, not a Odin's Easy Gin. I used the below: #2 Juniper - 20g Angelica Root - 2g Coriander - 10g #3 Juniper - 20g Angelica Root - 2g Coriander...

Re: Cloudy Gin question
what they said above. also, if you have a gin that is on the cusp of louching it can change with temperature difference. Thanks howie. Yes, that is only thing I found when I Googled it, that temperature can be a factor. Bottle #1 for example was clear when I bottled it, it then turned slightly a fe...

Re: Cloudy Gin question
Good info above. For eye-bleeding levels of reading search the forum for "louch", but basically the haze you see are oils which carry flavor. Depending on your goals you could do one of the following: If you like the way it tastes and don't want to dilute the flavor, your best move is to ...

Re: Cloudy Gin question
The short answer is the oils from the botanicals cause louching. Personally I wouldn't bother about it, it will taste the same. Making a very small "fores" cut at the beginning of the run will help avoid some of the problem, that first small cut has a lot of oils in it. Dont make the cut ...

Thank you Chownchown wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 3:05 pm ^this
You've got lots of flavor (oils) in there. The oils fully dissolve in say, 50+% alcohol, but when you dilute, the oils can't stay in solution and comes out causing the haze. My gin always seems to louche around 40% so i bottle at 45% and it remains clear.

Re: Cloudy Gin question
Hi. What you see is called louching as the biological oils cause the solution to haze. This can often be solved most simply by taking the proof up above 43% by adding a higher proof base Spirit to your gin if you care about it. If you don’t care, it’s fine to drink. There are lots of threads on HD ...

Cloudy Gin question
Hi all, I made a gin three weeks ago in my Air Still and quite liked it, so thought I would make 4 more slightly different. I take 1 litre of 40% ABV vodka that I made a few months ago. The spirit has already been double distilled, I made cuts and filtered it through activated carbon. I put the vodk...

Re: Building Carbon Filter help
Hi RedMick, Hot water is the best to prepare it. I see there are three options for filtering. You (meaning anybody) could buy a pre-built filter system from a company such as Still Spirits which comes with a carbon block. You pour a bit of water in it to 'activate it' and then you use it. The second...

Hi RedMick, Cool, I am Derbyshire myself. I know what you mean. I have been researching this for 3+ months now and my brain leaked out a while ago (a little is still retained). You can actually buy 1.5" & 2" Tri Clamp converters. Below is a 1.5" one I bought. What I may use it f...

Re: Building Carbon Filter help
I started off filtering using the 'Air Still Collector System', then moved onto the 'EZ Filter' (which I hated and returned it the next day), then the 'Z-Filter', all three from Still Spirits. A week ago I was leant the new 'Filter Pro' from Still Spirits, but to be honest I have used it once and d...

Re: Building Carbon Filter help
image.jpgGreat thread! I too am building a filter “just to see”. If it cleans up my neutral (one never knows until they prove it) and if it does nothing or not enough to justify the extra work or $$ then I won’t do it a second time. My question is if we can use carbon filters for a fish tank?? This...

Can’t answer these questions, Dale. I use the “liver filter” NZChris promotes. It’s worked flawlessly so far. ss @still_stirrin, can you please tell me where I can find some information on this "liver filter". I really want to see what other people have built or bought. SS was making a jo...

, I don't suppose you know who Gert Strand is who wrote the paper on carbon filtering? I could be wrong about this but I suspect the he started off as a hobby distiller long ago. Maybe back around the time of the Yahoo Distiller Groups" Not sure that he has any official qualifications. Hes bee...

I too read the article and was confused so following this with interest. What is the effect on the product when filtered? Is it an in your face, wow what a difference or is it more subtle than that. I note that one local manufacturer produces their activated powder from Macadamia Nut shells. Hi And...

Re: Building Carbon Filter help
I want to build my own activated carbon filter to polish my spirit. So I'll pose a question in return. Why do you need to filter your spirits at all? Because there really isn't a good reason to be doing so. A clean fermentation, conservative cuts , airing and aging are all that a required. Hi @Expa...

Hi all, I am really sorry as this is going to be a long post, but I need your help. I want to build my own activated carbon filter to polish my spirit. Re: Quality of Ethanol
A " condencer column" isnt a good discription of a still type.......It's either a pot still or a reflux still. Things start getting confused if all start speaking a different language. Sorry, still relatively new to all this even though I have been doing it for a few years. It is a reflux...

Quality of Ethanol
Afternoon all Quick question for you. I am using a Still Spirits T500 boiler and a T500 condenser column to distil and happy that it is nice and simple. I was told that a good way to test the quality of your spirit is to put a little bit on a spoon and to put a lit match next to it. If it is pure et...

Hello from the UK
Hi all, My name is Alan and I am from the UK. I joined this group today and have been brewing/distilling for around 6 years. I am still a very big novice, but like to experiment with my equipment. I own 3x Air Stills (from Still Spirits), a T500 boiler & a T500 stainless steel reflux column. I a...
