Re: Question on watt and flavor
I run 2 5500 watt elements with no off flavors. I have used many different yeast varieties and all have different characteristics. I found my palate prefers specific yeast for the type of distillation I'm using. If the new make is off try another yeast. Or change the mash bill. I have a 26 gallon st...

Re: Steamed Grains for Mash?
I steam my mash with a steam wand inserted into a 55 gallon food grade barrel. Look in steam mashing and distilling. There's tons of info there.

Re: Steam rig build
I'm sure a manometer and a 5-7.5 psi prv would be enough safety to safely run your steam boiler. I do not run a manometer on mine I did add a pressure gage. I have some posts you can read thru and if they are something you would like to do go for it I've had no problems. My steam wand has a silicone...

Re: 20 gallon barrel bourbon mellowing
I am in kansas, it's a humid climate, I loose proof over time. The barrels are in an outbuilding which could change things a bit inside the barrel. Its a metal building with a concrete floor. The barrels are on 2 2x4 pine boards. The angles share is whats to be expected with the barrel size, I have ...

20 gallon barrel bourbon mellowing
2 year old gibbs 20 gallon barrel was harsh with lots of tannins and oak. The mash was a bourbon mash bill put in the barrel at 120 proof and double pot distilled first steam on the grain second electric element. The hearts cut for 26 gallon spirit run was as follows. Took the first gallon and a qua...

Re: Silicone tip for steam wand
The slit may be too small building up too much pressure. Also as the mash heats up the mash will be more fluid. Took me a few different cut variations to find my setups sweet spot

Re: Steam rig planning
I did not see significant pressure difference from 3/4 to 1/2 steam feed line on my testing. Only that the steam has to travel faster in the 1/2 pipe to supply the same volume. My tests were 11000w. If you put a 3/4 valve on your air compresser and opened it would it build pressure, same test with 1...

Prv as steam injector
I have thought about this. I just thought I would throw it out there. While testing my venturi tip, my 5 psi prv tripped on 11000w and had no problem venting the pressure. Maybe this inline with a silicone tip would give minimal pressure working steam, and a venturi may be an option with limited 5 p...

Re: Steam rig planning
I drill out 1/2 inch fitting so pipe will slide thru and soft solder fitting in place. Here's my safety setup only addition would be vacuum relief. 5 psi to 7.5psi is what I use 10 psi is above my comfort level.

I use dephlagmator as pre condenser. I fill 26 gallon boiler to 20 gallons and rip thru it with 11000w. So far so good.

Dephlegmator as pre condenser
I like to push the limits when stripping and find that if I put my dephlagmator in series with my product condenser, I can use less water, and it's more efficient.

Re: Steam mash 100 lbs corn silicone injector
Update 1.005 sg in 4 days not bad I'll strip it tomorrow. I just wrap the barrel in a blanket and put one of these $13 back heaters under the barrel. It works better than the fish tank heaters and holds the temp at around 80*f. The room temp is in the low 60's. I will update on stripping day.

Re: Steam mash 100 lbs corn silicone injector
I also wondered about the enzimes but then thought about stirring a pot on the gas stove top with my corn soup. The fire was much hotter than the steam and did not have issues then, so I gave it a go. At our level, the steam is not under pressure and hot as hot. I saw Pinto with a turkey fryer stirr...

Re: Steam mash 100 lbs corn silicone injector
I have tested more than one nozzle and found its not needed also it does not perform better than just the one. For the mash I give it a stir so the consistency is soup and bucket it to the still. I used a heat gun and made a funnel out of a hdpe bucket for the still transfer.
Hope this helps

Re: Silicone tip for steam wand
Keep in mind i run 2 5500w elements your results may vary. Started with a 5/8 silicone tip with a small slit, the pressure slowly rose above 4.5 psi and tripped my pressure relief valve. This rise was over a 10 minute duration. The problem is, it was not great in the venturi department lol. It appea...

I used soft water from a water softener system my starting ph was 6.7. My mash after the cook is 5.2 I'll top it with water so my ph will be a bit higher. No ph adjustments either. I filled the water to the bottom line and will fill to the top line ser pics.

Re: Steam mash 100 lbs corn silicone injector
I used about 4 to 5 gallons of water in my boiler to cook the 100 lbs of corn. I added aha 400 ferm solutions enzimes to the water in the blue barrel while I was heating up the water. Yes I just dumped in 100 lbs of corn then mixed it after. The 7/8 steam tip did not get any corn in it during the ma...
