Re: Electric, robobrew, variac, help
It is a true variac. Guess I just need to fill er up with water and see what happens! Worst case I can unplug and just use the Robinson by it’s self unless I break something. And worse worse I dump into my keg still and go back to gas. Thank you yummyrum for your input

Re: Electric, robobrew, variac, help
Alright more details and thanks for the replies. Robobrew has a 1000w and a 2nd 500w element, 110v and im on a 20amp circuit. My variac is rated 20a so I think my equipment is all good. 1500w, 110v and 20amp=all good right? What I’m really trying to understand is if I set my heating element temp con...

Electric, robobrew, variac, help
done a few batches of beer on a robobrew and saw the still attachments. Excited for electric distillation and read numerous threads on it. Mostly how pid controllers can’t just be set it and forget it. I’ve done 10ish runs over propane with a quarter barrel and pot column setup so I’m familiar with ...

Re: NChooch's Carolina Bourbon
@ Barbasol Sounds like you weren't too far off , but seems like you missed the mark somewhere there . I've gotten the best conversion by soaking the corn using 25% (sterile) backset, and 25% water for a day ... add the rest of the cooking water, and then do the 3-rest corn cook (130, 165, 200) . th...

Yeah that is what I thought. Yes the barley and rye were crushed.

Re: NChooch's Carolina Bourbon
Hi guys, first try at all grain. I basically doubled the recipe. I soaked 14lbs cracked corn in 4 gallons boiling water overnight in my cooler. Added that to my bop with an additional 4 gallons. and started cooking. I got to a nice simmer and towards the end of 90 minutes I noticed the corn almost f...

Re: New still, new recipe, newbie, need help!
Thanks for the replies fellas. I have been reading here for quite a long time. I have done 4 or 5 sugar washes with great success so I decided to upgrade to a larger still and try my hand at AG with a bigger batch. I've also done 6 or so partial mash beers. I have a little experience but not enough ...

Re: New still, new recipe, newbie, need help!
Obviously this is a whiskey and I'm looking for flavor which is why I chose a pot still vs a reflux still. I originally started with a 3 gal pot still and had no problem collecting distillate starting in the 80-90% range. My current setup is basically 5 times bigger than what I started with. After r...

Stirred and mixed. Added 8 gallons of boiling water and stirred. Covered w...

Re: Help with all grain mashing
Thanks rd. definitely will limit my grain to water ratio to 2lbs max. I believe I read another post where you used the fruit press. Not quite there yet but a false bottomed bucket should do nicely.

Help with all grain mashing
Hello all, first time poster but I have read a lot!! I recently used the sour mash method http://homedistiller.org/grain/wash-grain2/sourmash" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow that Jack describes with half cool water and half boiling water to mash a gr...

Re: Help with variac
Thanks eternalfrost. So it sounds like the second link I posted would do the trick as its rated to 1000w max? Otherwise I should try to find a different one on ebay.
Could I use the variac I have but only to 50% output, and do you think that would be enough power to get to temp?

Help with variac
I don't have a lot of experience with electronics so I hope you guys can help a brother out. I am using a small scale still, 4 gallon boiler 1 inch cooper column. My heating element is a 1000w 120v 60hz Aroma hot plate. I've had a lot of problems maintaining constant temperature (cycling of power cr...
