In future runs, I plan on packing the column with copper "wool" . I don't know what it called. Like a Brillo pad, but copper.

Re: My first upgrade

If you’re going to run with that electric element I assume you’re planning on removing the grain from your mash and racking prior to stilling it. In my opinion I wouldn’t run anything but hazy liquid with an electric element. Some others have claimed to run on the grain but apparently I’m not that ...

Re: My first upgrade

That looks quite good. I take from it you ran it in pot still configuration. What kind of still head have you attached? Keep on going with the tri-clamps...it's the way to go. Well, a mash can be hard to get out of that tiny valve you have installed. If you plan on running mostly mash for...

Thanks, I adjusted the hose and removed the kink. Took 17 minutes to fill first quart.

First stripping run starting now.

PXL_20220221_175151215.jpg I set up my still and am doing my first ever stripping run. Everything seems to be set up correctly. I'm using my mash pot to circulate cooling water so I can drain and add more water as needed. I also figured out a way to keep hose from jumping out of pot, using a binder...

My first upgrade

I did a sugar wash sacrificial run a couple weeks ago. I was afraid to use an open flame, so I bought an electric heat plate. It took nearly two hours to get to temp. After a couple hours of collecting (maybe a gallon). I figured the still was clean enough and cut it off. It was very heavy and hard ...

Re: My first still

Thnaks for the info. I will look for replacements for the gaskets. I thought about trying flour paste in the lid.

Re: My first still

Thank you. I was thinking about skipping the all water and do a vinegar mix. There is a silicon gasket where the pieces connect together, but I can't see if the silicon will be exposed to vapors, because it is covered by the clamp. I have a couple gallons of experimental beer ferment that I never go...

My first still

PXL_20211126_133151270.jpg I've been brewing beer for over ten years and started thinking about making the step to distillation last year at the start of the lock-downs. I began reading this forum and others on the net. I made my list of parts and tools need to build from scratch and had them in my...

Howdy, I've been brewing beer for the past ten years or so. I've been gardening and canning for 45+ years. I'm also a High School chemistry teacher, so I'm familiar with the process, but not the art. I love Rum and want to dive into the mysteries of a dunder\muck pit. I plan on building one in the g...
