Fruit juice as an added fermentable to sugar wash

So I did some searching of the forum, and I'm not saying the answer isn't there, but I was unable to find specifically what I'm looking for. My wife said she found a couple 1/2 gallon jugs of fruit juice (I think apple and cranberry) back in the pantry that had expired and was going to dump them. I ...

Re: Adding Column Length benefits...

Sound advice from above. Upgrading to 2" copper from the boiler through the condenser will make a very competent, versatile still, much faster (especially on strips) than what you have now. Make your riser/column modular and you're golden. This is what another member did and added it to his ho...

Re: Adding Column Length benefits...

None without adding a reflux condenser. Gotcha, that's what I kind of gathered from my reading on this site, just wasn't sure. Appreciate the quick response sir. 😁 So here is another question. Is the 1.5" short column that comes out of the top of the boiler a bottleneck to the point that I wil...

Re: Adding Column Length benefits...

Off topic from the question but just looking at the picture that slobber box looks a bit small. Agree....Their description states: "Re-condensation takes place in the secondary chamber (aka slobber box) due to drop in pressure as vapor travels from a narrow tube into a larger volume." The...

Re: Adding Column Length benefits...

OK, good to know. It's a 30 liter boiler and I use propane. Appreciate the insights and I'll look into making a complete 2" still.

Adding Column Length benefits...

Hi All, Just a noob question for the experts here. I am running the 8gal Speakeasy still pictured below. It has a 1.5" short column with a tri-clamp attachment for the slobberbox/condenser chamber. If I add another length of pipe in the 24-36" length neighborhood packed with copper mesh, w...

Re: conical vs flat bottom fermenters

You just have to make sure to remember to pull the air lock out or it'll suck the water in it down inside... Or it is important not to forget to slightly open the lid of the fermenter, of course ;) Or just use distillate in your air lock :D Both very good options! Nowadays I generally have the air ...

Re: conical vs flat bottom fermenters

When I switched from buckets to a conical while brewing beer, it was a game changer. I absolutely prefer the ease of cleaning, ability to dump trub and not have to rack to a secondary not to mention being able to bottle right out of the conical without worrying about what's settled getting into the...

Re: conical vs flat bottom fermenters

ability to dump trub and not have to rack to a secondary not to mention being able to bottle right out of the conical Hell yeah. By the way, how do you dump your trub: by full opening the valve or by letting it slowly drain thru a small gap? As others noted, I open it up full and usually it takes a...

Re: conical vs flat bottom fermenters

Conicals are a complete waste of money for anyone on the homebrew scale. Full stop. At least a dozen times I've fermented the exact same must, in almost identical volumes, side by side in both stainless bucket and a stainless conical and they had identical fermentation kinetics. Conicals are easier...

Gotcha. I apologize for rehashing something that's been discussed. I looked back and wasn't able to find any info on it. I apparently have poor search skills... :-) I agree with you both and have no interest in drinking the fores, so will continue to chit can it. Just the smell gives me a headache. 🀒

No methanol in the fores? What's your take?

So this fella on youtube, who I've followed for a while and who seemed to be fairly knowledgeable, states he's done some research and found some surprising info on methanol. Wondering if'n anyone else has seen this. Most of the info I've gleaned from this site (which I would consider much more credi...
