Re: No access to 2" copper.

You should put cold water in the bottom and take hot out the top to maintain a thermal gradient. I've gone away from using the ice, thanks to users on this site. I've since started using water hoses to use with the bucket, one draining the hot water into the swimming pool. :) So much stress was rel...

Re: No access to 2" copper.

Ron, I've looked at Grainger a few times but didn't know anything about them. Thanks for the info.
And I like the idea of using a multi-tube riser as a last resort, and it really seems quite doable. Thanks for that myles!

Re: No access to 2" copper.

Oh yes, a leibig will be built before summer has ended I'm sure. I have access to the sizes of copper needed for that so that's not a problem.

No access to 2" copper.

Hey all! The pot still I use right now has a modified 2 inch female coupler that reduces to a 3/4 inch elbow all screwing into a piece of threaded stainless pipe welded to the top of my 5 gallon sanke (the setup was built by a friend long before I knew of this site and knew of tri-clamps.) With that...

Re: Good size/volume for beginner pot still

I use a 5 gallon keg and at first I thought it was awesome, because I'd only make 3 gallons worth of wine/mash at a time. It does great and can strip 2 quarts from about 2 1/2 gallons of wine at a time. Now I'm making 5 gallons worth at a time and it is a headache to split it up and break everything...

Re: My set up

For everyone who has had problems finding cheap(er) carboys, I found a site while looking for wine making equipment that has the 5 gallon ones for like $29, which was not too bed considering that the other sites wanted nearly $50 for them. I found it after I cracked one of mine (gonna use the milk c...

Re: Keg Connection

Mine was done a little differently. I had the female end there welded on to the still. http://i43.tinypic.com/2cxgpky.jpg The head is made up pf three pieces hammered and soldered into place. http://i40.tinypic.com/o8s5kh.jpg That works real nice but I am very interested in the method used here.

Re: What'd ya'll make today?

I made a simple corn mash. I do it a little different and I don't think I've seen this recipe on the site. (I haven't read them all yet) But I put 5lbs of plain corn meal and probably about 5.25lbs of sugar and mix it with 3 gallons of water and heat it on the stove, making sure all of the sugar is ...

Re: Cooling the Coils in the Condensor

thats a nice looking pot dude. real solid. with a keg still did you make a hole in the side or do you undo the copper at the top to fill it? how do you clean it? The top of the keg has been fabricated to where a female end of a piece of pipe is welded to the hole that is already in the top of the k...

Re: Cooling the Coils in the Condensor

Ice is the worst option. Horribly wasteful of energy. If yer usin' ice yer ignorin' better options. So far all I've had to do is buy two 20 lb bags of ice. I put in one bag and fill the rest of the way with water. When that ice melts, I put in more ice as needed. It's only $1 a bag, but I'm just ti...

Re: Cooling the Coils in the Condensor

Well right now I am just using that 5 gallon keg. But I am about to have a 15.5 gallon keg to make larger runs. I usually make a 3 gallon wash to run off in the keg. Out of the 3 gallons I easily get 4 jars of spirits if i want to have a strong finish; for something that's a little easier to sip I'l...

Cooling the Coils in the Condensor

I have heard of two ways (so far) to cool the coils in the flake stand. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f186/johnboy007/still1.jpg The most common way I have heard is to have flowing water run from the bottom of the stand to the top, but another was to just fill the stand with ice and as it melts ...
