Cornflakes wash SG ?

I’ve seen a lot of recipes that use cornflakes for flavor in a sugar wash. This seems like a waste with all those starches in there so I just ordered some amylase enzime and I’m going to try to make a batch of cornflakes mash using that converterd sugar. I will be making 5 gallons and will probably ...

Was a total brain fart on my end. The plan is copper mesh, which I have but I honestly don’t know what I was thinking.

Re: New column - no actual science, just ideas

Update, After finally finishing, building a controller, cleaning, making the decision to go to a smaller boiler and using a 5 gallon keg I had and all that, re cleaning, and vinegar run… if I finally ran 5 gallons of just basic turbo wash through this thing as a sacrificial cleaning run. This was th...

Re: Cork/stopper

Biff, Just curious. What/where is the thermometer going to be used for? What are you monitoring, what kind of still/rig/column? The thermometer is going smack in the center of the top of my column. I don’t know exactly what to call this column other than an experiment at this point. It’s built out ...

Odd question…

How many of you have to actually see a still run to completely get it? I read about distillation until I was blue in the face before I was ever brave enough to try it. A basic pot still is simple enough but even then there is a lot of minor adjustments that takes some learning that can have a big im...

Re: New column - no actual science, just ideas

I just realized that I have a few lbs of ceramic raschig rings that came with my original pot still that I never used. I am wondering if there would be any benefit at all to putting them in the 1” section of column between the copper mesh in the 2” section and the sight glass? My thoughts are, yes i...

Re: New column - no actual science, just ideas

If you plan on making neutral spirits, your column really should be full of an efficient packing and a whole lot taller. I'd honestly suggest studying modern reflux columns because they work a whole lot better these days. I'm not shitting on what you've made though I know it sounds like I am. It wi...

Cork/stopper

Can I use a natural cork (like a wine cork) for my temperature probe? Or can someone recommend a safe stopper to use? I believe rubber and plastics are a no no…

Re: New column - no actual science, just ideas

I did forget to mention that I built this thing with various ideas in mind. Like the placement of my dephlegamator and the diameter of the tube it’s made out of for instance. I don’t have a whole lot of money into it so I figured I would try it and see what works, if I find a problem I may change th...

Re: New column - no actual science, just ideas

So what’s the length of your 1/8” coil? What’s the length of pipe above your top tee? I’m wondering why you didn’t add that coil to the top like a CCVM? If that’s more of the coil sticking out above your sight glass your would have had plenty to make a long enough coil for reflux on top and you cou...

New column - no actual science, just ideas

So as I’ve stated before I’ve had a few different stills, the current one which I’ve owned the longest is a 13 gallon milk can with a 3 inch pot still arm that is over 10 years old that I got on eBay from moonshine distillers. From run 1 I’ve never liked much about it. I’ve tried to make adjustments...

New member- looking forward to swapping info and continuing to learn!

Greetings from the Great Pacific Northwest! I’ve been at this hobby for the better part of 12 years now. I have been a on and off home brewer for almost 25 years and when that stupid moonshiners show came out a few friends bugged me about making shine until I caved. I read and read until I felt conf...
