Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

Excellent info for those about to attempt their first barrel! Thanks for writing that up. You reminded me (and it should be emphasized here) that my first were pretty “manual” too, and while I love my jigs for speed, ease, repeatability, precision, etc. you can totally go for it without most of my ...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

When making mine I got a perfectly adequate fit by eye. Marked. Circle with a compas and bansawed it out carefully then sanded to the line with a spacer under one end to provide the taper. Because the stainless has some give and the head swells anyway I was able to get a watertight seal . Jigs are n...

Re: RO water

I've tried all three , RO water , spring water and tap water for both proofing for distillation and final proofing for drinking and can't say I could tell a difference apart from less scale in the boiler afterwards.

If you can get it I would go fo RO water.

Well I'm far from an expert but I'll give my opinion I'm not sure what that connection to the keg is but if it's not tri-clamp that might make upgrades tricky later Hard to tell if the head can be separated from the column which is a must for me as getting any packing out will be a nightmare if not....

Don't have a photo of mine but it's essentially the same as this one I found on the web . Cheap easy and surprising effective as long as you can get/turn a cylinder. Everything else is basic woodwork F7F4WV6I12KKDWG.jpg Agreed mate these scratters are super popular because they simply work well. I ...

Welcome to/from another UK member.

Well worth building your own in my opinion . Even if you only build the boiler everything else can be then be "bolt on" or built yourself .

Any idea what your interested in making?

Re: DIY Apple Scratter

Made a DIY scratter years ago from a block of wood turned round with a axle through the middle and a whole heap of screws sticking out about 1/4". Couple of pulleys and a motor and voila . The motor is underpowered and the apples need to be pushed in with another block of wood rather than self ...

Welcome I'm quite interested in your rectifiers license ..... I was under the impression that it was impossible (or as good as )for an individual as opposed to a company to get a licence in the UK. With a 2L still I'm guessing your not going into business ? A quick look at the HMRC website seems to ...

If you have a source for a sight glass which is that cheap id be very interested .... cheapest I've found is in the £40 region. Re: Sight glass , glass ( candle covers )

I was under the impression from a engineering standpoint that the reason these had nuts above and below the plate was so that the glass saw no load. So the load is tranfered down through the top plate through the four threaded rods and the glass floating between the two seals That's how I would desi...

To me that would be a glass column. But yea things do change and if you can build it that way you will have a very nice plater/flute.
Have I got the terminology wrong?
Is that why I can't find them cheaper?

Sight glass , glass ( candle covers )

So in the theme of making my own even when it's probably not worth it  . I intended to built my own using two spare ferrules ,a couple off offcuts of stainless (or scrap as my friendly steel stockists referred to them  ) but I've been struggling for ages to find a source for glass. Re: Fast fermentations

I blame UK bread yeasts, there is something different about the standard supermarket yeasts here I think. Always used whatever was in the fridge for breadmaking, usually a tin of Allinsons, and had similar experience to you, most ferments took 10 to 14 days regardless of temps, pitch rate, PH etc. ...

a regular burp from the airlock is not how you tell it's "done", if you took a starting gravity you will know when it's done? In all your time of making whatever that's a pretty standard test right? Also what's "done" for beer and wine is a bit different than what's "done&q...

Re: Ferrule fit

I have a cutter with a blade I deliberately blunted and rounded off so that instead of cutting it creates a internal ridge .... great for making press fit thermonitor ports.

2 or 3 of those ridges should take up that slack to hold it in place and solder should be able to bridge that.
