Re: "Air still vs pot still for 2nd run or small batches
I have a vevor 1000w, and it has to be run with a voltage controller if I'm running liquor. What model is your Vevor 1000w? I've been wanting to get an air still for making small batches of gin, but I don't want to spend over $250 usd on a Still Spirts Air still, when I can buy a Vevor for $80 to $...

Re: "Air still vs pot still for 2nd run or small batches
I have a vevor 1000w, and it has to be run with a voltage controller if I'm running liquor. Otherwise I loose a bunch of goodness in steam. With the controller I can start it at 500w and creep up as needed to keep the stream running well. And like previously pointed out, hook the fan up to straight ...

Re: Stilling in a BrewZilla 35l?
Hi Lordl, FWIW, I consider the so called “pro” lid as one of my most expensive mistakes. There’s insufficient clearances between the 2” and 3” ferrules and handles. The seal is an unapproved material, and a nightmare to seat. The sight and sound of a lid seal leaking mid run is not exactly fun. The...

So I did a search (being lazy) for sweetfeed and then replied to the conversation thinking I was looking at the main sweetfeed conversation... turns out I was not. But I wanted to post this here as well as it seems to be the more appropriate location for my interjection: Sweetfeed is the sec...

As of the time that Clawhammer created that video, there hadn't been an appeal yet. They posted that on July 29th and the appeal was filed August 14th...

Re: Texas judge rules home distilling ban UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
Well this was to be expected. The first hurdle is done. Move onto the 5th Circuit court. Assuming they uphold the lower court's decision, the ATF will appeal again. Then it will hopefully go to the Supreme court and be put to bed for good. One step at a time. I do believe that it will come out in ou...

Re: sweetfeed whisky
As an aside here; this is the second recipe I tried (after Uncle Jesse's) when I started about a year and a half ago. Compared to the corn whiskey, I didn't care for the white distilate from the sweetfeed. So I put all of it in the shed on oak cubes. A little over a year later, this stuff is delicio...

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
Brewed up a partial mash Franziskaner kit since I had an empty keg slot since Xmas. It's in my 6 gal Torpedo Keg pressure fermenter. Did a sugarhead on the 'spent' grains to make a small batch of whiskey! I have a just over a liter of product oaking on this same process from the Blue Moon clone I d...

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
Yesterday I blended and proofed an AG batch of corn something or other lol. Not sure what to call it because its my own frankenstein. I guess technically it could be considered a bourbon if aged correctly. 14 lb cracked corn, 7 lb malted barley, 1.5 pounds oats in 12 gallons of water. Ran 4 ferment...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
There's several ways that you can do this, its kinda dealer's choice. I usually scraped out the faded old corn off the top of what was left after siphoning (usually not more than 5-6 cups) and replaced that with the same amount of new corn. Then I would fill my bucket fermenter up to about a gallon ...

Re: anyone made signle malts whisky wanna share experience?
So correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe "single malt" just means that it has to be 100% malted barley. It doesn't mean that it has to be all the SAME type of malted barley. I'm primarily a beer brewer, and am just getting started in the distilling world, but I can tell you that a blend o...

Re: Stilling in a BrewZilla 35l?
you will never regret getting a power controller, it will improve your product substantially, especially when refluxing. how long does a spirit run take using just the 500w, i would have to camp out overnight at that power level :) i didn't know any better at first, but all my neutral was smeared t...

Re: Stilling in a BrewZilla 35l?
I have the Digiboil 35L 120v. I use a Brewhaus voltage controller ~80-90v on the display but for my rig that's on the 1000w for spirit runs. IMO the 500w offtake was just too slow. Hope that helps ya. It is awefully slow, especially once you hit 65% ABV or so. That's why I kick it up to run the tai...

Re: Stilling in a BrewZilla 35l?
FWIW, I have the Gen 3 Brewzilla and have been using it for distilling (American version). I have both the Alcoengine pot still head and the column still head. I typically set the temp controller to 140* to get started, and then switch to HH. I use only the 1000w heater for stripping runs (I may try...

Re: Air Still Pro Reflux With Air for Cooling ? What you think
Looking at the instructions, its interesting that they thought enough to make it useable as either a pot still or a reflux. Remove the packing and change to the larger tip for pot mode, or keep the small tip and the packing for reflux. Almost makes it an LM... I wonder if you could add an output val...

Re: vinegar run
Thanks for the replies and advice guys. I've decided to discard the leaves after the sacrofical run just to be safe. BUT: Here's a thought: take a quart of UJ and put it in a pot on the stove. Cover it and bring it to a low simmer, allowing whatever steam escapes to rattle through the lid. An occasi...

Re: vinegar run
I guess my next question would be whether I can use my first bucket of UJSSM as my sacroficial run, and still keep some of the backset for the beginning of the sour mash... The vinegar run was like an hour and the water distillation was a couple of hours. So although I'll toss the first alcohol run,...

vinegar run
So I purchased an alcoengine dome lid and still tops to get started. I'm running on my Brewzilla 3. Yesterday I did the vinegar run with plans to do a sacrificial run soon (its fermenting). But when I finished the vinegar runs, the copper on the inside was no longer bright and shiny, but grey and di...
