Holy shit... he was just at the shop 2 weeks ago dropping off his first batch of barrels for retail. This is devastating.

Rest in peace Ben :(

Re: Angel Yellow for beer?!?

It would be like boiling a beer regardless of what fermented it. You'd be better off using enzymes but if you're doing a partial mash, adding a little extra DME to compensate wont change the flavor TOO much. The grains are mostly for flavor or head retention, which you probably got just by steeping ...

Re: Air Still Pro Reflux With Air for Cooling ? What you think

20230309_202549.jpg I didnt get around to breaking it down, but I make a pretty nice gin with it. Did a spirit run of low wines that yielded about 2 liters of ~170-180 proof. I then took a quart of that and proofed it to 90 proof. I soaked botanicals in the ~2 quarts of 90 proof for a day. Strained...

Re: Cloudy Gin question

^this
You've got lots of flavor (oils) in there. The oils fully dissolve in say, 50+% alcohol, but when you dilute, the oils can't stay in solution and comes out causing the haze. My gin always seems to louche around 40% so i bottle at 45% and it remains clear.

Re: Air Still Pro Reflux With Air for Cooling ? What you think

Looks like the design needs to defy the laws of distillation to meet their claims. I'm thinking it takes a packed column, not some plastic hanging on the side of an airdistiller.. It does have packing according to the PDF. We won't know much until someone dissects one, but I'd guess the packed colu...

See based on what I and most newbies learned (methanol always comes off early), I' The question I have is where do you and other newbs learn this stuff .? YouTube? Facebook distilling groups? The instruction that come with stills?........it would be good to know?? Recently I've been looking at a fe...

Re: Consensus on methanol in foreshots?

I wouldn't actually know what the consensus is, or if there is one, or how to find out what it is. Consensus does change, that's why they had to tidy up the parent site recently. I know what I need to know for running a pot still and for recycling and reprocessing the feints. When it comes to my re...

Re: Alcoengine vs potstill

You can "kinda" run an alcoengine reflux as a pot still by removing the packing and running it hotter than usual with the larger opening. The problem is your product will come out pretty warm. I'd put the collection jar on ice or somehow cool the output tube. Ideally you'd want a pot still.

Consensus on methanol in foreshots?

I did some searching and didn't come up with any clear answers, and maybe there aren't many right now... People now say it's a myth that most methanol is concentrated in the foreshots, and that it is smeared throughout the run. I'm wondering if anyone has any data on this especially with different s...

I also love my Tilts. I've been using them for months and they're great! Given my fermenters usually need a bit of help applied by way of a heat pad, and given that I am often travelling, I plugged my heaters into a smartplug so when the Tilts data says it's done (which I can also check from anywhe...

Hello there

Whoops this is my second post. I've been stalking for a while now. Working at a homebrew shop, i figure i might as well get some hands on. Been fermenting lot's of stuff for a while and decided to get into distilling last year. I have a few whiskeys under my belt but am getting into gin/nuetral. I l...

Re: Tilt Hydrometer

I love my Tilts. I thought it was gimmicky at first but got one for my birthday and now have 3.
I highly recommend getting a Raspberry Pi to log data. It's got more features than the iphone/android app. Logging every 5 minutes cuz i can
