Re: Angel yellow Label Yeast

Yellow label acts similar to koji but is not the same thing. Just google what koji is…typically aspergillis oryzae. The second ingredient in yellow label is what acts similarly. It’s listed as rhyzobus. It’s likely rhyzobus oryzae, but that’s unclear. Do some googling on mucormycosis. 70 percent of ...

No, I can’t recommend any. I haven’t looked at them recently, I’ve had a dr that has been a little easier to work with than the system it seems like you’re in.

No worries. He made it this far and hasn’t given up. Throughout my own experiences and seeing some others go through some shit, what I’ve taken away is that there are a number of tests that CAN be done, but aren’t unless there is a problem or they’re specifically requested. Various genetic screening...

If you haven’t had pulmonary function testing, that may help. Along with a pulmonary specialist with experience. The only reason I suggest it is my dad is looking at a lung transplant after having undiagnosed interstitial lung disease/pulmonary fibrosis for 30 plus years. By most accounts he should ...

Re: Mash transferring via shopvac

I think you’re missing the point. What I’m proposing is using a keg boiler/thumper as the receiving vessel. The mash never touches the shop vac. It is just there to supply abundant vacuum. You can ferment in whatever you like, and many people already use kegs as boilers. If you rig a hose (suction r...

Mash transferring via shopvac

The topic of suitable mash pumps (and their prohibitive expense) comes up from time to time. After bucketing the remnants of a yellow label ferment, I recalled something I used to do at work and wondered if anyone has done similar. In the past I have had a number of occasions where I had to pump out...

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?

Did you actually receive kegs? The description mentions scented candles. I’ve encountered similar listings on Amazon, stahlwhile wrench sets at really low prices, and only received a 14mm wrench. The seller was using the same ad for single wrenches and full sets and just changing the price.

Re: Goop?

If you can get angel yellow label off Amazon (two day delivery) it has the enzymes in it and you could convert the starch in this batch. Then use what you learn with reading on enzymes and mashing on future ones.

I think you already made your determination. At least that’s my read based off your earlier posts where you dumped ferments because of doubt. If you have doubt, just keep them separate.

Re: Scorching priorities

The sure way is gas chromatography. You’d have to make the determination on if it’s worth it and if so figure out who to send a sample to. The bigger question you asked is the difference between knowledge and perception. On that front sometimes ignorance is bliss. Steam fixes most of if not all your...

Re: Chlorine removal in hot water?

It’s a little beyond this question, but I have recirculated water in the past through an on demand camping shower style water heater off of Amazon and seen temps exceeding 170. If there is a max temp limit on that unit, I haven’t found it yet. It was for a kids pool on a camping trip, and worked gre...

Re: Chlorine removal in hot water?

Salt, you’re right, I will not be able to gelatinize or mash, I’m not trying to. Using yellow label. As to the normal operating range, you’re also correct. The last two models I installed included the directions to exceed the normal safety cap of 140f, I don’t recall if you can get to 160 or 180, bu...

Re: Chlorine removal in hot water?

Salt, I was not aware of the low flow rates to get sufficient contact time in the charcoal. Thats good to know. This is more of a one off quick and dirty or one time use deal rather than a SOP trying a no-kettle approach. The other thing I considered is running the hot water through the filter into ...

Re: Chlorine removal in hot water?

Yes ferment water for ylay. I’m trying to limit or eliminate chlorine while possibly simultaneously getting a pasteurization of the grain. I may be able to go higher than 140f depending on the heater model (some allow exceeding the 140f max through programming).

Chlorine removal in hot water?

I have a question about removing or driving off chlorine from water. Specifically hot water directly from the water heater supply. I know the recommended procedure is to either bubble water with an air stone overnight, or boil the water, or reverse osmosis. What I’m considering is running a nsf wate...

I’m looking at the silicone heat band venkman posted, it shows 5” in width. There is also a 10” wide version showing the same wattage, so in my mind a lower watt density per unit of surface area. I’m unsure if this is a typo and it’s effectively two of the 5” units attached, or if it’s accurate and ...

To add copper to the vapor path you can get the gin basket and put copper scrubbers inside. It’s about the only place besides the wash where it is practical.

I would agree if the washes were identical other than the ylay vs us05. The problem is the stated variable was solely the yeast and multiple others have been introduced.

Mr beer, what is the variable you are testing in this experiment? What do you expect to learn from the stripping of the wash volumes? I have a boatload of questions on ylay, mainly revolving around how it is working and exactly what it is doing.

Re: Phytase in yellow label

Normandie, try searching “phytase in mashing”. You’re correct, it is liberating calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus for the quasi-symbiotic fermentation. What I’m getting at is I think the yellow label is more of a package. Ie it is doing more than replicating an enzyme mash and ferment. My belief is...

Phytase in yellow label

So I’m trying to wrap my head around how yellow label is working. Specifically if it is fermenting anything more than what might be fermented in a “normal” enzyme mash. Reading the package I noticed alpha amylase and beta gluconase as expected but also phytase. Google-fu has lead me to the understan...
