Re: All dry molasses wash attempt

Thanks, subbrew. I am going to test the entire spectrum of mixes of light and dark sugars, sweet and backstrap molasses, pure cane juice, etc. I got a mango and a melon version bubbling right now with all sugar and no molasses. We shall see.

Re: What exactly is dunder?

Does anyone use the term "trub" in rum distillation? I have seen it referenced as a synonym to dunder as well as what is left in the still after a run. I'll take "dunder" as leftover wash based on what this thread has provided. Just curious about trub.

Re: All dry molasses wash attempt

Thanks, subbrew. Now I know why this was so cheap. And we do have a Tractor Supply Company store nearby - they are good for that stuff. I will spend some time there looking at ingredients. I just checked out "powdered molasses" - about $7 per lb vs the $35 per 50 lb bag of this stuff. My b...

Re: All dry molasses wash attempt

Just read on the website that there is lots of bran in it, so it is not pure "powdered" molasses.

Re: All dry molasses wash attempt

Subbrew and Higgins;

Thank you. Both of those issues were complete surprises to hear about. I will check when I get home this evening.

All dry molasses wash attempt

Greetings once again...still a rookie. I am looking to run a few batches of 5 US gallons using only dry molasses. (Having read one of the threads in which someone mentioned it, it makes sense for shipping costs to keep the water out of it.) So I got a 50 lb bag delivered earlier this week. The first...

Excellent. I have some distillamax on the way and that is what I plan to use as my primary.

Appreciate your help!

Re: Pure Sugar Can Juice Rum : I need your help !

Thanks, Bolverk. That sounds odd but worth a try. The cane juice is frozen, though, so I am curious if the natural yeast would have died off? I am guessing that fermentation will take a bit longer than the usual 3-5 days. What has been your experience?

Re: Pure Sugar Can Juice Rum : I need your help !

Love this thread!!! A friend just sent me 5 gallons of pure cane juice and I have to try it out. Can you please advise how much juice you use for a 5 gallon mix and how much yeast? I am currently experimenting with different yeasts and variations of cane juice, molasses, etc., and am still trying to...

Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

One follow up question...and, yes, I have searched for the "formula page" for the answer to this oft-asked question. And I ran a word search a dozen times with no success, so forgive the question. Is there a definitive chart for the grams of sugar per liter/kilogram/gallon for all of the s...

Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

Pugi... Thanks for the post. My education is just beginning but the first few lessons have been incredible. My question is about the yeast bomb. I have done them several times and used to keep one running for weeks at a time, always with good results. But i never boiled my yeast for fear of killing ...

Re: Butch's first foray...

Thanks, Normandie! That was just what we had access to in what you might call a very austere location in a large sandbox. I am looking at Lallemand yeasts and going to have a stainless pipe with activated charcoal (or something similar) when I gear up again. Expecting lots of good stuff from you fol...

Butch's first foray...

After getting my interest piqued by the rhums of the Caribbean, esp St.Lucia, I needed to try distilling for myself. Having lived in so many places overseas for so many years, I had not settled down long enough to acquire the equipment until my last job over yonder pond. A friend of mine was already...

Hey, Ya'll!!!

Greetings from afar! My name is Butch and I got interested in distilling my own rhum after my first visit to St. Lucia, home of several of my all-time favorites, including Chairman's Grand Reserve. The incredible flavors that came out of that first bottle simply amazed me. They also have a local ver...
