Re: Propionic acid
Glad to hear your corn is working. I have three electric stills, so heating water is easy and quick. I plan to heat some water to near boiling, put the corn in my beer making mash tun, and pour the hot water on the corn. Then I'll hook a hose up to the still and to the bottom of the mash tun, let st...

Re: Propionic acid
Jimbo, I'm going to be watching this close. I bought a bag of cracked corn this morning, the label was clean so I don't think it had any funky stuff on it. I'm going to cook 15 lbs of this corn, and add 5 lbs of malted barley.
Keep your post updated so I can tell how you did.

Re: Propionic acid
Well, a little more research showed me this. At our Tractor Supply store, their cracked corn lists propionic acid clearly on the label, and at our Bomgaad Store their cracked corn doesn't list it. We are in the heart of corn country, WTF. Anyway I guess one just has to look at the label, and shop ar...

Re: Propionic acid
Guys, I looked at a bag of cracked corn this morning at the local farm store and I didn't see anything about propionic acid on the label. Actually all it said was the protein content. Where on the bag are you seeing propionic acid. Maybe the corn in my store is OK. Husker you look at Bomgaards ??? T...

Re: Artisan Spirit Magazine Article
Guys, thanks for all the input about his article. I get this magazine because I have a state, and federal license, I didn't know you could read it online. I looked at the article again, and it says Missouri's law is worded funny, "no one shall be prohibited from". I take that to mean it's OK in Miss...

Artisan Spirit Magazine Article
The winter issue of Artisan Spirit magazine has a two page article about the increase in home distillers. They are stating that Missouri has just passed a law allowing the home distiller to poduce 200 gallons per year, although it would still be a federal offense. If this is true it's certainlly the...

American Holiday
As we all know, December 5th is an important cultural and historical day and those of us who honor our past and cherish the future should take the time and effort to celebrate appropriately. Thursday is the anniversary of the repeal in 1933 of pernicious and seditious prohibition. Let's all drink to...

Thunder, thanks for taking the time to reply. But, there was no mention of GREEN in that definition, so I'm still confused is green anise the same as anise?? I've had some anise turn the liquor a nice green tint, and some turn the liquor a light brown. I do like the taste, and the green color, but g...

SugarDaddy, you never have to throw anything away, you can re-run it as many times as you like. sooner or later the nasty smell/taste will get tired and go away. :D Making those cuts is not as hard as one thinks, after about a year of making bad booze I suddenly found the answer, and you will too. Re: What's the longest you ever let a bottle age before drin
I have about twenty gallon that is 8 years old, got it in glass carboys, with strips of chared oak from a wine barrel. I was very careful making the cuts so I have only hearts in those carboys. I'm an old fart so don't drink much, once in a while I drain out a small glass, sit back sip, and smile. D...

I have a considerable amount of whiskey in five gallon carboys, got the oak in the carboys with the whiskey, and some of it is over six years old. As far as I can tell it just sits there getting better every year. If you have the room just keep your spirits in the container there in, they don't age ...

Re: Some legal math
A very common practice to buy whiskey or ethenol, and blend it at a small distillery. Most of the small distillerys can not afford to produce a product as cheap as the large companyies do, so the practice of buying in bulk, blending, and bottling it under your own label is very wide spread.
